Bomb kills one, injures 16 in S Pakistan

Pakistani police gather at the site of a bomb explosion in Karachi on June 15, 2013.

A bomb explosion targeting a military truck has killed at least one civilian and injured 16 others, including 11 soldiers, in the southern Pakistani port city of Karachi, security sources say.

Å“A civilian was killed and five others were also wounded. At least 11 soldiers were wounded in the bomb blast on their truck,” said a military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, on Thursday.

Reports say that the force of the explosion also damaged several cars and motorcycles nearby.

Security forces said they have launched an investigation into the violent incident.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack so far, but pro-Taliban militants are often blamed for bomb attacks in Pakistan.

Despite frequent operations by the Pakistani army, militants have carried out numerous attacks against security forces and civilians, and have managed to spread their influence in various regions of the country.

Karachi has experienced a fresh spate of violence and targeted killings over the past few months.

On August 20, separate acts of violence left at least seven people dead in the city.

Thousands of people have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when Pakistan entered an alliance with the United States on the so-called war on terror.

Thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
