An Afghan senator has censured the United States for supporting the Taliban militants and its interference in the internal affairs of Afghanistan ahead of the presidential election, Press TV reports.
Senator Belquis Roshan told Press TV on Thursday, Å“In the presence of foreign troops, the people of Afghanistan would never have peace and independence. Now that the US is trying to help the Taliban participate in the coming election, there would be no prosperity for our people too.”
Kabul has announced that the presidential election will be held on April 5, 2014.
On Thursday, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Kabul had thwarted a foreign plot conspired by the opening of a US-backed Taliban office in Qatar.
The Afghan government, which says wants to lead any talks with the militants, has demanded a full explanation as to how Washington and Doha allowed the Taliban to raise its flag over the office in the Qatari capital.
Å“The truth has finally come to be known when they opened an office for the Taliban in Qatar. With opening this office, they wanted to create ethnic violence here. There in Qatar, they wanted to make the Islamic Emirate for us and here an Islamic presidency. We have foiled their plan. We want a peaceful Afghanistan and a central government,” said Karzai.
Commentators have warned against further insecurity during the electoral process, with the aim of creating ethnic tensions and disintegrating Afghanistan.
Å“We are worried about that. Thatâ„¢s why we share our 7,000 polling center list to the security institution to [ensure safe] and responsible security for these 7,000 polling centers,” said Noor Mohammad Noor, a spokesman for Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission.
