{"id":94456,"date":"2013-11-27T02:57:55","date_gmt":"2013-11-27T02:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/obama-approves-new-us-canada-fracked-gas-pipeline-used-to-dilute-tar-sands\/"},"modified":"2013-11-27T14:44:31","modified_gmt":"2013-11-27T14:44:31","slug":"obama-approves-new-us-canada-fracked-gas-pipeline-used-to-dilute-tar-sands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/obama-approves-new-us-canada-fracked-gas-pipeline-used-to-dilute-tar-sands\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama Approves New US-Canada Fracked Gas Pipeline Used to \u201cDilute Tar Sands\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Steve Horn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Although TransCanada&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/5857\" target=\"_blank\">Keystone XL<\/a> tar sands pipeline has received the lion&#8217;s share of media attention, another key border-crossing pipeline benefitting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/2632\" target=\"_blank\">tar sands<\/a> producers was approved on November 19 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/e\/enr\/applicant\/applicants\/217905.htm\" target=\"_blank\">by the U.S. State Department<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Enter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rbnenergy.com\/its-a-kinder-magic-the-eagle-ford-canada-diluent-trail\" target=\"_blank\">Cochin, Kinder Morgan&#8217;s 1,900-mile proposed pipeline<\/a> to transport gas produced via the controversial <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/fracking-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\">hydraulic fracturing (\u201cfracking\u201d) <\/a>of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/7759\" target=\"_blank\">Eagle Ford Shale basin<\/a> in Texas north through Kankakee, Illinois, and eventually into Alberta, Canada, the home of the tar sands.<\/p>\n<p>Like Keystone XL, the pipeline proposal requires U.S. State Department approval because it crosses the U.S.-Canada border. Unlike Keystone XL \u2014 which would carry diluted tar sands <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/6950\" target=\"_blank\">diluted bitumen (\u201cdilbit\u201d)<\/a> south to the Gulf Coast \u2014 Kinder Morgan&#8217;s Cochin pipeline would carry the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diluent\" target=\"_blank\">gas condensate (diluent)<\/a> used to dilute the bitumen north to the tar sands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision allows Kinder Morgan Cochin LLC to proceed with a $260 million plan to reverse and expand an existing pipeline to carry an initial 95,000 barrels a day of condensate,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/business.financialpost.com\/2013\/11\/22\/kinder-morgan-secures-u-s-president-permit-to-transport-diluent\/?__lsa=7b37-6158\" target=\"_blank\">the Financial Post wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe extra-thick oil is typically cut with 30% condensate so it can move in pipelines. By 2035, producers could require 893,000 barrels a day of the ultra-light oil, with imports making up 786,000 barrels of the total.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Increased demand for diluent among Alberta&#8217;s tar sands producers has created a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/canadas-tar-sands-unexpected-winner-fracking\" target=\"_blank\">growing market for U.S. producers of natural gas liquids, particularly for fracked gas producers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTotal US natural gasoline exports reached a record volume of 179,000 barrels per day in February as Canada&#8217;s thirst for oil sand diluent ramped up,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/USseesrecordnaturalgasolineexportstoCanada.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">explained a May 2013 article appearing in Platts<\/a>. \u201dUS natural gasoline production is forecast to increase to roughly 450,000 b\/d by 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2013\/11\/26\/obama-approves-border-crossing-fracked-gas-pipeline-used-dilute-tar-sands\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Steve Horn Although TransCanada&#8217;s Keystone XL tar sands pipeline has received the lion&#8217;s share of media attention, another key border-crossing pipeline benefitting tar sands producers was approved on November 19 by the U.S. State Department.
