\nvideotapes and the possibility that the accused

ZAHN: For a point of reference, I’d like for you
\nto analyze pictures of Osama bin Laden that
\napparently were taken prior to September 11.<\/p>\n
Describe to us the color and the tone of his skin,
\nand then I want you to contrast that with pictures
\nwe know to have been taken much later.<\/p>\n
GUPTA: You can look [at pictures from a
\nDecember 2001 video] and notice that he has
\nwhat some doctors refer to as sort of a frosting
\nover of his features — his sort of grayness of
\nbeard, his paleness of skin, very gaunt sort of
\nfeatures. A lot of times people associate this with
\nchronic illness. Doctors can certainly look at that
\nand determine some clinical features.<\/p>\n
But even more than that, it’s sometimes possible
\nto differentiate the specific type of disease or
\nillness that he may be suffering from. The sort of
\nfrosting of the appearance is something that
\npeople a lot of times associate with chronic
\nkidney failure, renal failure, certainly someone
\nwho is requiring dialysis would have that.<\/p>\n
He’s also not moving his arms. I looked at this
\ntape all the way through its entire length. He never
\nmoved his left arm at all. The reason that might
\nbe important is because people who have had a
\nstroke — and certainly people are at increased risk
\nof stroke if they also have kidney failure — he
\nmay have had a stroke and therefore is not
\nmoving his left side. And in the rest of the
\nvideotape, he does move his right side a little bit
\nmore than he does his left. So those are some of
\nthe things that are sort of “of note” here in this
\nmore recent videotape.<\/p>\n
ZAHN: I think we need to remind the viewers
\nonce again that the president of Pakistan talked
\nabout [bin Laden] importing two dialysis
\nmachines into Afghanistan. Of course, no one
\nother than the president of Pakistan right now is
\nconfirming that [bin Laden] in fact needed
\ndialysis.<\/p>\n
GUPTA: That’s right. And again, renal dialysis –
\ntalking about hemodialysis — is something that
\nreally is reserved for patients in end-stage renal
\nfailure. That means their kidneys have just
\ncompletely shut down.<\/p>\n
The most common cause of something like that
\nwould be something like diabetes and
\nhypertension. Once that’s happened, if you’re
\nseparated from your dialysis machine — and
\nincidentally, dialysis machines require electricity,
\nthey’re going to require clean water, they’re going
\nto require a sterile setting — infection is a huge
\nrisk with that. If you don’t have all those things
\nand a functioning dialysis machine, it’s unlikely
\nthat you’d survive beyond several days or a week at
\nthe most.<\/p>\n
ZAHN: If he had all these things you’re talking
\nabout to keep the dialysis machine running, how
\nmuch help does he need around him to administer
\nthe treatment?<\/p>\n
GUPTA: You certainly need someone who really
\nknows how to run that dialysis machine. You
\nhave to have someone who’s actually assessing
\nhis blood, Osama bin Laden’s blood, to see what
\nparticular dialysate he would need, and to be able
\nto change his dialysate as needed. So you’d need a
\nkidney specialist, a technician — quite a few

The Israeli sources said Israel and the United States assess that Bin Laden probably died in the U.S. military campaign in Afghanistan in December. They said the emergence of new messages by Bin Laden are probably fabrications, Middle East Newsline reported.<\/p>\n
But Bin Laden’s heir has been chosen and his colleagues have decided to resume Al Qaida’s offensive against the United States and Western allies, the sources said.<\/p>\n
They said the organization regards the United States as the main target followed by Israel. “In this case, it doesn’t matter whether Bin Laden is alive or not,” a senior Israeli intelligence source said. “The organization goes on with help from key people.”<\/p>\n
The sources said Al Qaida has already determined Bin Laden’s heir. They said the heir has not been identified, but is probably not Bin Laden’s son, Saad. Saad is said to be in his 20s and ranked within the top 20 members of Al Qaida.<\/p>\n
