A Chicago woman was arrested late last week after confronting the president of her long-time employer McDonald’s over the low wages she earns as she struggles to raise two young children.<\/div>\n

Nancy Salgado, 26, interrupted a speech by McDonald’s Corporation
\nPresident Jeff Stratton at the Union League Club of Chicago on
\nFriday, saying her wages weren’t enough for her to supply her
\nkids with basic amenities like shoes.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you think this is fair, that I have to be making $8.25
\nwhen I’ve worked for McDonald’s for ten years?\u201d<\/i> Salgado, who
\nclaimed to have never received a raise in that time, said at the
\ngathering as Stratton stood at a podium.<\/p>\n

“I’ve been there forty years,”<\/i> Stratton replied, the
\nextent of his response to Salgado.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing is that I need a raise. But you’re not helping your
\nemployees. How is this possible?\u201d<\/i> Salgado continued at
\nStratton. \u201cTo your employees you haven’t done anything.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

She and six other protesters were arrested and given tickets for
\ntrespassing.<\/p>\n

The group was part of dozens of McDonald’s workers, supported by
\nmembers of the Workers Organizing Committee of Chicago, that
\nattended the Union League Club event as part of the \u201cFight for
\n15,\u201d<\/i> a campaign that seeks a $15-an-hour wage for fast-food
\nworkers.<\/p>\n

Salgado, single mother of children ages 2 and 7, is a cashier at
\na McDonald’s working thirty to forty hours a week, she told The
\nReal News. She has worked at her current McDonald’s position for
\nten months.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Stratton] needs to know we are what all the employees at
\nMcDonald’s are going through,\u201d<\/i> she said Wednesday. \u201cWe’re
\nstruggling day-to-day to provide our needs in our houses, things
\nfor our kids. And it’s just–it gets harder and harder with just
\nthe poverty wage.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

Salgado said she was quickly approached by authorities at the
\nevent and told she would be arrested.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember just telling them \u2026 because I have to speak out my
\nmind and I had to tell the president the poverty wage I’m living
\nin, that’s just against the law?\u201d<\/i> she told The Real News.<\/p>\n

She said she expects her employer to take some kind of
\nretaliatory action against her soon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere’s nothing going around [yet] that I know of. Would
\nthere be? I had some hours cut off,\u201d<\/i> she said. \u201cDo I feel
\nthey’re going to do something against me? I do. You know. They
\nhaven’t done anything yet.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

A fair wage to Salgado would be around $15 an hour, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love my job. I love interacting with customers. I love
\ntalking with them, even though, like, it means I’m harder, I’m
\nbroken, you know, because sometimes I can’t provide a gallon of
\nmilk in the fridge,\u201d<\/i> she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s like the CEOs make billions and billions a year. Then
\nwhy can’t they provide enough for their employees?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
