In that same timespan in 2012, the agency received only<br \/>\n  293 inquiries.\n  <\/p>\n<p>The figures were supplied by public records request service<br \/>\n  MuckRock, which requested FOIA totals for the NSA this year in<br \/>\n  addition to any internal agency communications pertaining to its<br \/>\n  2013 FOIA receipts.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Following revelations this summer of mass surveillance programs<br \/>\n  supplied by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, the agency<br \/>\n  received almost double the FOIA requests it got in all of 2012 &#8211;<br \/>\n  1,809.\n  <\/p>\n<p>The largest chunk of public records requests occurred directly<br \/>\n  after the first stories were released by the Guardian and The<br \/>\n  Washington Post in early June, MuckRock reported.\n  <\/p>\n<p><i>&ldquo;The requests have leveled off somewhat from earlier in the<br \/>\n  summer when the first media leaks appeared, although they<br \/>\n  continue to be much higher than normal,&rdquo;<\/i> an NSA FOIA official<br \/>\n  wrote accompanying the request.\n  <\/p>\n<p>MuckRock added that many of the <i>&ldquo;unprecedented&rdquo;<\/i> number of<br \/>\n  FOIA requests came from its own users.<br \/>\n  <\/p>\n<p>Copyright: <a href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/usa\/nsa-foia-records-requests-869\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"NSA public records requests up 1,000 percent since Snowden spying revelations\">RT<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Published time: October 08, 2013 02:19 Reuters \/ Kai Pfaffenbach The number of FOIA requests sent to the NSA increased tenfold in the aftermath of disclosures revealing the agency&#8217;s mass surveillance programs, including PRISM, Boundless Informant and others.
