{"id":75838,"date":"2013-10-04T04:38:59","date_gmt":"2013-10-04T03:38:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/italys-policies-caused-boat-incident-un\/75838\/"},"modified":"2013-10-04T04:38:59","modified_gmt":"2013-10-04T03:38:59","slug":"italys-policies-caused-boat-incident-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/italys-policies-caused-boat-incident-un\/","title":{"rendered":"Italy&#8217;s policies caused boat incident: UN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the Italian Financial police work in the small harbor of Lampedusa on October 3, 2013 after a boat with up to 500 African asylum seekers caught fire and sank off Italian shores.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A UN official has blamed Italy&trade;s strict policies toward irregular migrants for the death of at least 93 people in a boat incident in the country.\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Treating irregular migrants only by repressive measures would create these tragedies,&#8221; said Francois Crepeau, the United Nations special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, on Thursday, adding, &#8220;Irregular immigration is not a crime against persons or property or security&#8230; 99.99 percent of irregular migrants pose no threat to security.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>His comments came after a boat carrying some 500 people caught fire and capsized near the Italian island of Lampedusa.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;These deaths did not need to happen,&#8221; he said, adding that the &oelig;criminalization of irregular immigration&#8221; had played a role in the incident.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After the incident, Giusi Nicolini, the local mayor of Lampedusa, said that emergency workers found 93 bodies, including those of two children and several women.<\/p>\n<p>&oelig;The survivors are in a state of shock. They have been in the water since the early hours of the morning,&rdquo; Nicolini said.\n<\/p>\n<p>A total of 151 people have been rescued so far.\n<\/p>\n<p>The asylum-seekers said they were from Eritrea and Somalia.
