Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah has called for a peaceful solution to the two and half years of crisis in Syria.\n<\/p>\n
Sabah made the remarks on Friday during a meeting with US President Barack Obama at the Oval Office in the White House.\n<\/p>\n
The Kuwaiti emir also called for more efforts to prevent another war in the Middle East.\n<\/p>\n
In addition, he stated that two Kuwaiti nationals who are being held at the Guantanamo prison should be released as soon as possible.\n<\/p>\n
On his part, Obama said he is optimistic that the talks between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Geneva will produce concrete results.\n<\/p>\n
The war rhetoric against Syria intensified after foreign-backed opposition forces accused the government of President Bashar al-Assad of launching a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21.\n<\/p>\n
Damascus has vehemently denied the accusations, saying the attack was carried out by the militants themselves as a false-flag operation.\n<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem said Damascus is ready to implement a Russian proposal to place its chemical weapons arsenal under international control.\n<\/p>\n
The Russian government proposed the initiative during a meeting between the Russian foreign minister and Muallem in Moscow on Monday.\n<\/p>\n
“We want to join the convention on the prohibition of chemical weapons. We are ready to observe our obligations in accordance with that convention, including providing all information about these weapons,” Muallem said.\n<\/p>\n
In response, Obama asked Congress to delay a vote on authorizing military action against Syria in order to give the Russian proposal a chance to play out.\n<\/p>\n
