Bob Corker<\/a>, Tennessee Republican and ranking member of the Foreign Relations Committee, told Fox News the United States must assume a \u201cleadership\u201d role in an attack. \u201cThis was not contrived,\u201d Croker said about doubts the Syrian government is responsible for the unsubstantiated attack. \u201cAnd, obviously, the world is a better place when the United States takes leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. \u201cleadership\u201d in the illegal war against Libya resulted in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2011\/09\/08\/libya-war-died_n_953456.html\" target=\"_blank\">at least 30,000 people killed and 50,000 wounded<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Corker said the U.S. must conduct \u201csurgical\u201d attacks but stopped short of sending troops to defeat Bashar al-Assad and his military.<\/p>\n<p>Republican senators John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said there is \u201cvery little doubt\u201d that Syria used a chemical weapons against civilians, an assertion lacking any credible evidence, and said it is \u201cthe responsibility of civilized nations everywhere\u201d to bomb and terrorize the people of Syria.<\/p>\n<p>McCain and Graham called for an intense bombing campaign. \u201cUsing stand-off weapons, without boots on the ground, and at minimal risk to our men and women in uniform, we can significantly degrade Assad\u2019s air power and ballistic missile capabilities and help to establish and defend safe areas on the ground,\u201d the neocon dynamic duo said in a joint statement. \u201cIn addition, we must begin a large-scale effort to train and equip moderate, vetted elements of the Syrian opposition with the game-changing weapons they need to shift the military balance against Assad\u2019s forces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, \u201cmoderate, vetted elements of the Syrian opposition\u201d are rare, if not virtually nonexistent. \u201cNowhere in rebel-controlled Syria is there a secular fighting force to speak of,\u201d the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/04\/28\/world\/middleeast\/islamist-rebels-gains-in-syria-create-dilemma-for-us.html?_r=1&amp;\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a> reported in April.<\/p>\n<p>Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, responsible for lending a hand in the neocon mass murder campaign in Iraq under similar dubious pretense, told CBS on Sunday he is uncertain there is such a thing as a \u201cmoderate, vetted\u201d secular opposition in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no affection for Mr. Assad. I\u2019ve dealt with him. I know him. And he is a pathological liar with respect to my interaction with him,\u201d the retired general said. \u201cBut at the same time, I am less sure of the resistance. What do they represent?
