Unidentified gunmen have shot and killed a Libyan army colonel in a drive-by shooting in the restive eastern city of Benghazi, security officials say.\n<\/p>\n
“Unknown gunmen in a car with tinted windows shot and killed Colonel Mustafa al-Aguili,” said a security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, on Friday.\n<\/p>\n
“The attack took place after the victim left a mosque in the Al-Hadaiek neighborhood of Benghazi, following the main Friday prayers,” the source added.\n<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Colonel Jelal al-Arafi escaped an assassination attempt after he discovered an improvised explosive device planted under his car in Benghazi.\n<\/p>\n
On Monday, Khadija al-Ammami, director of Benghazi office for the privately-owned Libya al-Ahrar television channel, narrowly survived an assassination attempt after unidentified gunmen opened fire at her.\n<\/p>\n
Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city, was the birthplace of the 2011 revolution. It is largely governed by militias in the absence of unified Libyan security and military forces.\n<\/p>\n
The former rebels refuse to lay down their arms, despite efforts by the central government to impose law and order.\n<\/p>\n
Benghazi has been the scene of numerous attacks and political assassinations over the past year as the power struggles between militiamen have intensified.\n<\/p>\n
