A four-year-old boy fatally shot himself in the head using a gun he found in his house in Dundee, Michigan.\n<\/p>\n
Dundee Police Chief David Uhl said Sunday that Damon Holbrook had found the unlocked, loaded gun on the floor of a bedroom closet, according to Toledo Blade\n<\/p>\n
The boy\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s father is faced with charges of manslaughter with gross negligence.\n<\/p>\n
Personnel from the Monroe County Ambulance and Dundee Volunteer Fire Department attempted to resuscitate the child in his house, and before transferring him to St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor, but he died in the hospital shortly afterwards.\n<\/p>\n
\u00c5\u201cResponders tried very hard to save the boy but were unable to,\u201d Sgt. Tom Redmond told The Detroit News. \u00c5\u201cHe was transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor and was declared dead at 5 p.m.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
\u00c5\u201cThe father and mother are going through a divorce; she was living elsewhere when it happened,\u201d Redmond explained. \u00c5\u201cThe child\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s sister, 10, and brother, 5, were also living in the house. They were upstairs in a separate bedroom when the shooting occurred.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
According to an interactive project between slate.com and the anonymous creator of the Twitter feed @GunDeaths, more than 7,300 people have been killed by guns across the US since the deadly shooting in Newtown on December 14, 2012.\n<\/p>\n
However, slate.com says the actual number of deaths as of 8\/16\/2013, could be over 21,000, almost three times more than the numbers reported in US media.\n<\/p>\n
According to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, on average, 32 people are killed with guns in the US every day and 140 Americans are treated for gun-related injuries in an emergency room.\n<\/p>\n
Critics have blamed the notoriously liberal gun control laws in the US for the high rate of gun violence in the country.\n<\/p>\n
