A senior Pakistani official says heavy rains and flash floods over the past week have claimed the lives of at least 84 people across Pakistan.\n<\/p>\n
A senior official in the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Wednesday more than 2,000 homes were destroyed and some 80,000 people were affected in different regions.\n<\/p>\n
Pakistani-administered Kashmir, central Punjab, southwestern Balochistan and southern Sindh provinces are among worst-affected areas hit by heavy rains and flash flooding. Flooding was especially bad in Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, because of the southern city’s faulty drainage system.\n<\/p>\n
Heavy downpours are forecasted for the next month in Pakistan.\n<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the government has been criticized for failing to take more effective measures in the face of such incidents.\n<\/p>\n
The latest floods, triggered by monsoon rains, have destroyed and damaged hundreds of houses and flooded thousands of acres of agricultural land since late last month.\n<\/p>\n
Medical teams and aid groups have warned of a growing risk of potentially fatal diseases.\n<\/p>\n
Pakistan regularly suffers from flooding during the monsoon season, which usually runs through July and August. The country suffered the worst floods in its 66-year history in 2010 — when floodwaters killed over 1,700 people.\n<\/p>\n
A couple of years ago, the country was hit by its worst floods, which killed nearly two-thousand people and impacted twenty-one million others.\n<\/p>\n
