{"id":5623,"date":"2009-05-14T13:04:34","date_gmt":"2009-05-14T12:04:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=5623"},"modified":"2009-05-14T13:04:34","modified_gmt":"2009-05-14T12:04:34","slug":"digital-big-brother-with-ip-cctv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/contributions\/digital-big-brother-with-ip-cctv\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital Big Brother with IP CCTV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Half of city councils have moved their CCTV to IP systems, letting more real-time applications be used by police and other government agencies.<\/p>\n<p>According to numbers obtained by network firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telindus.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Telindus<\/a> via a Freedom of Information Request, half of city councils have digitised some of their CCTV \u2014 with a third doing so over the past four years.<\/p>\n<p>Telindus suggested IP-based cameras allow police to use real-time applications, such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition, and to get up-to-date photos on their mobile computers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith today\u2019s technological advancements, security and peace of mind should be on the council\u2019s terms rather than at the mercy of outdated technology,\u201d said Mark Hutchinson, managing director of Telindus, in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is clear that we are on the verge of a digital switchover comparable to that in the television space,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The UK has the highest rate of CCTV cameras in the Western world, with over four million of the devices watching streets, public transport and more. Such coverage has been the subject of much <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/121951\/cctv-runs-risk-of-data-protection-breach\">privacy debate<\/a>, especially as new tech \u2014 such as talking cameras or those <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/603969\/cctv-will-now-hear-as-well-as-see\">that can &#8216;hear&#8217;<\/a> \u2014 have been trialled.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Half of city councils have moved their CCTV to IP systems, letting more real-time applications be used by police and other government agencies.
