{"id":5527,"date":"2009-04-28T11:46:00","date_gmt":"2009-04-28T10:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=5527"},"modified":"2009-04-28T11:46:00","modified_gmt":"2009-04-28T10:46:00","slug":"more-than-5-million-stored-on-dna-database","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/contributions\/more-than-5-million-stored-on-dna-database\/","title":{"rendered":"More Than 5 Million Stored On DNA Database"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rinf.com\">RINF News<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The UK national DNA database is expanding at an alarming rate and is already five times larger than\u00a0DNA databases\u00a0in other\u00a0European countries.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the profiles contained on the database are of innocents who were later cleared of any crime but their details\u00a0remained on the database.<\/p>\n<p>The figures were revealed in parliament in response to a question asked by Lord Hanningfield in his role as a Conservative peer at Westminster.<\/p>\n<p>Lord Hanningfield\u00a0said: \u201cI was a bit surprised at the numbers. As someone who believes in personal freedom, I am a bit worried about this creeping state control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Suffolk alone\u00a052,275\u00a0profiles have been\u00a0added to the database and 140,103 in Essex\u00a0have also been added.<\/p>\n<p>A spokeswoman for human rights group Liberty said: \u201cOur DNA database is at least five times larger than those of European countries, yet our crime rates are remarkably the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA smaller, more targeted database of serious sexual and violent offenders would cost less to our purses and our privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RINF News The UK national DNA database is expanding at an alarming rate and is already five times larger than\u00a0DNA databases\u00a0in other\u00a0European countries.
