{"id":53890,"date":"2013-07-28T19:14:18","date_gmt":"2013-07-28T18:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/desiccated-thyroid-extract-compares-favorably-with-levothyroxine-in-the-treatment-of-hypothyroidism\/53890\/"},"modified":"2013-07-28T19:14:18","modified_gmt":"2013-07-28T18:14:18","slug":"desiccated-thyroid-extract-compares-favorably-with-levothyroxine-in-the-treatment-of-hypothyroidism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/desiccated-thyroid-extract-compares-favorably-with-levothyroxine-in-the-treatment-of-hypothyroidism\/","title":{"rendered":"Desiccated thyroid extract compares favorably with levothyroxine in the treatment of hypothyroidism."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"sub_abstract_label\">CONTEXT: <\/span><span>Patients previously treated with desiccated thyroid extract (DTE), when being switched to levothyroxine (L-T\u00e2\u201a\u201e), occasionally did not feel as well despite adequate dosing based on serum TSH levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"sub_abstract_label\">OBJECTIVE: <\/span><span>Our objective was to investigate the effectiveness of DTE compared with L-T\u00e2\u201a\u201e in hypothyroid patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"sub_abstract_label\">DESIGN AND SETTING: <\/span><span>We conducted a randomized, double-blind, crossover study at a tertiary care center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"sub_abstract_label\">PATIENTS: <\/span><span>Patients (n = 70, age 18-65 years) diagnosed with primary hypothyroidism on a stable dose of L-T\u00e2\u201a\u201e for 6 months were included in the study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"sub_abstract_label\">INTERVENTION: <\/span><span>Patients were randomized to either DTE or L-T\u00e2\u201a\u201e for 16 weeks and then crossed over for the same duration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"sub_abstract_label\">OUTCOME MEASURES: <\/span><span>Biochemical and neurocognitive tests at baseline and at the end of each treatment period were evaluated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"sub_abstract_label\">RESULTS: <\/span><span>There were no differences in symptoms and neurocognitive measurements between the 2 therapies. Patients lost 3 lb on DTE treatment (172.9\u00b1 36.4 lb vs 175.7 \u00b1 37.7 lb, P<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"sub_abstract_label\">CONCLUSION: <\/span><span>DTE therapy did not result in a significant improvement in quality of life; however, DTE caused modest weight loss and nearly half (48.6%) of the study patients expressed preference for DTE over L-T\u00e2\u201a\u201e.
