{"id":51166,"date":"2013-07-18T01:39:39","date_gmt":"2013-07-18T00:39:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/colorado-town-considers-hunting-licenses-bounties-for-drones\/51166\/"},"modified":"2013-07-18T01:39:39","modified_gmt":"2013-07-18T00:39:39","slug":"colorado-town-considers-hunting-licenses-bounties-for-drones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/colorado-town-considers-hunting-licenses-bounties-for-drones\/","title":{"rendered":"Colorado town considers hunting licenses, bounties for drones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A small town in the state of Colorado is currently weighing a new ordinance that would allow the issuance of hunting licenses for unmanned aerial vehicles, and even offer bounties for their successful takedown.<\/p>\n<p>\n  Deer Trail, a town of some 540 residents that lies 55 miles east<br \/>\n  of Denver, has drafted what might be described as hostile<br \/>\n  regulation aimed at drones, outlining the weapons, ammunition,<br \/>\n  rules of engagement and bounties involved with drone hunting,<br \/>\n  reports Denver broadcaster ABC 7News.\n  <\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;The Town of Deer Trail shall<br \/>\n  issue a reward of $100 to any shooter who presents a valid<br \/>\n  hunting license and the following identifiable parts of an<br \/>\n  unmanned aerial vehicle whose markings and configuration are<br \/>\n  consistent with those used on any similar craft known to be owned<br \/>\n  or operated by the United States federal government,\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n  reads the ordinance draft.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Though the legislation from the small rural town might seem<br \/>\n  unusual, Deer Trail resident Phillip Steel admits that the move<br \/>\n  is purely symbolic.\n  <\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBasically, I do not believe in<br \/>\n  the idea of a surveillance society, and I believe we are heading<br \/>\n  that way,&#8221;<\/span> says Steel.\n  <\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;We do not want drones in town.<br \/>\n  They fly in town, they get shot down,&#8221;<\/span> he adds.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Though the ramifications of issuing licenses to damage or destroy<br \/>\n  private or possibly federal property in the form of flying drones<br \/>\n  seem unclear, the ordinance might ultimately not go beyond a<br \/>\n  novelty.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"AFP Photo \/ John Moore\" src=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/files\/news\/1f\/cb\/90\/00\/1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kim Oldfield, the town clerk, tells 7News that the so-called<br \/>\n  drone hunt is not likely to take the form of local vigilantism.\n  <\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;I can see it as a benefit,<br \/>\n  monetarily speaking, because of the novelty of the<br \/>\n  ordinance,&#8221;<\/span> says Oldfield.\n  <\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Possibly hunting drones in a<br \/>\n  skeet, fun-filled festival. We\u2019re the home of the world\u2019s first<br \/>\n  rodeo, so we could home of the world\u2019s first drone hunt. If they<br \/>\n  were to read it for the title alone and not for the novelty and<br \/>\n  what it really is, it sounds scary, and it sounds super vigilante<br \/>\n  and frightening,&#8221;<\/span> adds Oldfield.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Though the town might think of the drone hunting ordinance as<br \/>\n  tongue-in-cheek, it could well also attain a serious political<br \/>\n  connotation. Debate over the use of drones on US soil is already<br \/>\n  contentious, with the federal government already deploying<br \/>\n  military grade drones to patrol borders, and police precincts<br \/>\n  around the country looking to use unarmed variants to assist with<br \/>\n  surveillance.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Currently, the town\u2019s ordinance outlines the type of weapons that<br \/>\n  could be used for the engagement of drones, limited to<br \/>\n  <span>\u201cany shotgun, 12 gauge or<br \/>\n  smaller, having a barrel length of 18 inches or greater.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n  Licenses to shoot down drones, or at least take a shot at one,<br \/>\n  would be issued anonymously and without a background check.<br \/>\n  Applicants would also need to be at least 21 years old and<br \/>\n  capable of reading and understanding English.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Deer Trail mayor Franks Fields has not yet decided how he feels<br \/>\n  about the potential drone hunting legislation.\n  <\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;I haven&#8217;t made my decision<br \/>\n  yet. It&#8217;s all novelty.
