two-thirds<\/a>
\n of American adults are overweight or obese, which has caused a
\n dilemma for air transport providers.\n<\/p>\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s an issue for sure,<\/i>\u201d Craig Yale, vice president of
\n corporate development for Air Methods, told NBC. \u201cWe can get
\n to a scene and find that the patient is too heavy to be able to
\n go.\u201d<\/i>\n<\/p>\n
\n Emergency medical providers use helicopters in dire instances
\n where a patient needs the fastest possible transportation to
\n survive. But if a patient is too large or heavy to fit in the
\n helicopter, they may not be able to receive the urgent care they
\n need in a fast enough manner.\n<\/p>\n
\n About 5,000 obese patients are denied helicopter transportation
\n each year in the US. In some cases, their weight or size exceeds
\n the aircraft\u2019s capacity, but in other cases, these patients
\n simply cannot fit through the doors. Even if heavy patients fit
\n into the aircraft, their weight can sometimes prevent a
\n helicopter from lifting off the ground.\n<\/p>\n
\n Transporting a patient that exceeds a helicopter\u2019s weight
\n capacity can also pose a dangerous risk to all on board: a
\n helicopter that crashed in New York\u2019s East River in October 2011
\n went down because it was over capacity by 250 pounds.\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cIt is definitely becoming more of a problem,\u201d<\/i> Dr. David
\n Thomson, a professor of emergency medicine at East Carolina
\n University, told NBC. \u201cThe whole spectrum of ER
\n services, from flying to ground services, gets affected when
\n you\u2019ve got these huge folks.\u201d<\/i>\n<\/p>\n
\n The ability for a helicopter to lift heavy patients also depends
\n on the air density, and obese patients are more likely to weigh
\n down the aircraft when the air becomes thinner during the summer
\n months.\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cIf you have a really hot, humid day, we can\u2019t lift nearly as
\n much as on a day when it\u2019s cold and crisp,\u201d<\/i> Thomson said.\n<\/p>\n
\n This spring, a 460-pound patient from Texas, a 444-pound patient
\n from Arizona, and a 225-pount patient from Arizona were all too
\n large to fit in a responding helicopter. The patients were
\n suffering from breathing problems, severe abscesses and a
\n flesh-eating bacterial infection, respectively. After emergency
\n responders were unable to fit them in a helicopter, the patients
\n had to travel by ambulance and their chances of survival were
\n severely hindered.\n<\/p>\n
\n Some emergency helicopters are unable to carry patients weighing
\n more than 250 pounds, and others are able to accommodate patients
\n weighing up to 650 pounds. As a result, emergency medical
\n providers have been forced to expand their fleets and purchase
\n larger air ambulances, which can be costly.\n<\/p>\n
\n The Duke University Medical Center has recently purchased two
\n large helicopters at the cost of $10 million each. And unless
\n two-thirds of all Americans shed their extra weight, medical care
\n providers will need to drop the extra cash to accommodate the
\n growing girths.\n<\/p>\n
