{"id":49332,"date":"2013-07-10T22:19:40","date_gmt":"2013-07-10T21:19:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/egypt-staging-a-democratic-military-coup\/49332\/"},"modified":"2013-07-10T22:19:40","modified_gmt":"2013-07-10T21:19:40","slug":"egypt-staging-a-democratic-military-coup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/egypt-staging-a-democratic-military-coup\/","title":{"rendered":"Egypt: Staging a \u201cDemocratic\u201d Military Coup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12158\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12150\">During the 2011 Egyptian uprisings, the military was jeered for cracking down on protestors and for the infamous <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/2100-202_162-20074749.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">virginity tests<\/a> they conducted on detained female protestors. In June 2012, when Mohamed Morsi won the presidential race with 51% of the votes, crowds gathered in Tahrir Square to celebrate his victory, chanting :<\/span> \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/middleeast\/2012\/06\/201262412445190400.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">God is great\u201d and \u201cdown with military rule.<\/a>\u201c\u00a0\u00a0 Barely a year passed before the crowds were cheering the U.S.-backed military for ousting their first democratically elected president in a coup dubbed by various media outlets as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-23210988\" rel=\"nofollow\">a democratic coup<\/a>.\u00a0 What transpired?<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12164\">Mr. Morsi alienated both Egyptians and foreign states in his short term in office. No doubt many Egyptians were alarmed and opposed to what they perceived as his \u2018power-grab\u2019, as well as the new constitution which passed in a referendum with 64% of a measly 33% turnout; but inarguably, the economy was a huge factor in sending protestors to the streets. The lack of progress in dealing with the economy, the fuel shortages, \u00a0and the IMF loan delay also contributed to the continuous unrest in Egypt .<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12171\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12166\">It is worthwhile mentioning here that a significant percentage of Egypt \u2019s economy is run by the military. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Robert Springborg, an expert on Egypt \u2019s military told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/18\/world\/middleeast\/18military.html?pagewanted=all\" rel=\"nofollow\">The New York Times<\/a>: \u201cProtecting its businesses from scrutiny and accountability is a red line the [Egyptian] military will draw\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 Also of note is the fact that long lines formed at gasoline stations in Cairo amid an apparent fuel shortage, disappeared quickly after the coup. \u00a0This led to speculation that the fuel crisis had \u201cbeen deliberately engineered to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/blogs\/ali-abunimah\/warning-humanitarian-catastrophe-egypt-tightens-siege-gaza\" rel=\"nofollow\">feed unrest and dissatisfaction with the Morsi government<\/a> in the days before its overthrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12178\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12173\">Gripped in social and economic crisis, it came as no surprise that on May 1<sup>st<\/sup>, a group opposed to Mr. Morsi which called itself \u201cRebel\u201d organized a 1 million people march to be held on June 30<sup>th<\/sup>. \u00a0\u00a0The group also planned on delivering a signed petition to the Prosecutor General at the same time with the aim of collecting 15 million signatures by that date. \u201cIn one month, movement promoters travelled the length and breadth of the country, collecting signatures door to door, on buses, in restaurants and offices as well as on the internet.\u201d<\/span> They claimed that they had secured just over <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">7 million signatures<\/a>, and four weeks later, on June 28<sup>th<\/sup>, the Washington Post reported that the group had secured <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/articles.washingtonpost.com\/2013-06-28\/world\/40255650_1_cairo-supporters-tahrir-square\" rel=\"nofollow\">22 millions signatures<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0(Given the timeframe and the challenges, surely this number has a place in the Guinness Book of World Records \u2014 if only it could be verifiable).<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12180\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12182\">This number cited by \u201cRebel\u201d became an accepted reality and was promoted by media outlets without verification. \u00a0As anti-protestors marched on Tahrir as planned, military \u00a0tanks and personnel blocked the pro-Morsi crowd from the onset; \u00a0enabling the media lens to capture the sea of anti-Morsi demonstrators and marginalizing his supporters. These actions together with the unverified 22 million signatures claim played an essential role in calling a military coup a \u201cdemocratic\u201d coup.  Washington was off the hook and funds could to secure the Egyptian army\u2019s cooperation and loyalty to Washington . <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12185\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12187\">But one should ask why was it that Washington which has a long standing relationship with the Moslem Brotherhood<a target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" name=\"_ftnref1\" href=\"https:\/\/us-mg6.mail.yahoo.com\/neo\/launch?.rand=6soksrmrq6al3#_ftn1\" rel=\"nofollow\" id=\"_ftnref1\"><\/a><sup><\/sup><sup>[1]<\/sup> rejected Morsi?<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12197\"> <span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12192\">There are many answers to this question \u2014 with the most basic being that he was not part of the plan. As early as 2007 speculation about Hosni Mubarak\u2019s \u00a0replacement appeared in the American mainstream media. Discussing his ailing health, in October 2007, Michael Stackman\u2019s opinion piece in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/10\/31\/world\/africa\/31iht-journal.4.8131891.html?_r=1\" rel=\"nofollow\">The New York Times<\/a> addressed the importance of a Mubark\u2019s replacement to be someone who would continue the same policies towards Israel and Washington .\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12201\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12199\">With this in mind, in 2008, young, \u2018civil society\u2019 Egyptians met with former Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice who called the young Egyptian activists the \u201chope for the future of Egypt \u201c. The \u201chope of Egypt \u201d also met the US National Security Advisor and prominent Congressional member. These meetings were organized by The Freedom House (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.freedomhouse.org\/template.cfm?page=66&amp;program=84\" rel=\"nofollow\">see link here<\/a>). The Freedom House, an outfit which calls itself \u201cindependent\u201d but receives 80% of its funding from the US government, including the National Endowment for Democracy \u2013 a CIA front \u2013 claimed to provide \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12204\" href=\"http:\/\/www.freedomhouse.org\/template.cfm?page=66&amp;program=84\" rel=\"nofollow\">advanced training on civic mobilization, strategic thinking, new media, advocacy and outreach<\/a>\u201c.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12208\">In 2010, Freedom House boasted of teaching new media tools to Egypt \u2018s \u201chope\u201d.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12212\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12210\">Freedom House had reason to boast. 2010 was a crucial year to decide and settle on Mubarak\u2019s successor as time was of the essence given Mubarak\u2019s health and terminal illness. In April 2010, the pro-Israeli Jerusalem Post ventured that former IAEA Chief, Egyptian-born Mohammad El baradei would \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jpost.com\/MiddleEast\/Article.aspx?id=172172\" rel=\"nofollow\">add excitement to Egyptian politics.\u201d<\/a> He did. \u00a0Mr. El-Baradei served on the Board of Trustees of the International Crisis Group funded by Carnegie, Soros, and Ford (Ford Foundation was a conduit for CIA funds during the Cold War \u2014 Saunders 2000<a target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" name=\"_ednref1\" href=\"https:\/\/us-mg6.mail.yahoo.com\/neo\/launch?.rand=6soksrmrq6al3#_edn1\" rel=\"nofollow\" id=\"_ednref1\"><\/a><sup><\/sup><sup>[i]<\/sup>) where he rubbed shoulders with colleagues Shimon Peres, Saudi Arabia\u2019s Prince Turki al-Faisal, \u00a0Richard Armitage, \u00a0Zbigniew Brzezinski, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12217\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12215\">Morsi\u2019s election not only interrupted Washington \u2019s efforts to replace Mubarak in spite of his close cooperation with Washington (specifically in cutting ties with Syria ). \u00a0Morsi presented Washington with many challenges. Not only was he reported to have called \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12219\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbn.com\/cbnnews\/insideisrael\/2013\/January\/Egypts-President-Calls-Jews-Apes-Pigs\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jews descendants of pigs and apes<\/a>\u201d, but his election into office was warmly welcomed not only by HAMAS, but also by the U.S.-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who called Morsi \u201cthe choice of the great people of Egypt\u201d while one of his senior aides, Saeb Erekat, said the democratic vote for Morsi \u201cmeant the Palestinian cause was the <a target=\"_blank\" id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12222\" href=\"http:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/news\/middle-east\/hamas-morsi-victory-in-egypt-will-help-palestinian-cause-1.443621\" rel=\"nofollow\">Number One priority for all Egyptians<\/a>\u201c. \u00a0 Washington was not in the business of making Palestinians jubilant, or contradicting Israel \u2019s demands. . <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12233\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12225\">Regardless, \u00a0Morsi dug in deeper.\u00a0\u00a0 Soon after taking office, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/#output=search&amp;sclient=psy-ab&amp;q=Morsi+orders+NGOs+out+of+Egypt&amp;rlz=1W1SNNT_enUS355&amp;oq=Morsi+orders+NGOs+out+of+Egypt&amp;gs_l=hp.3...310.6636.0.7252.30.24.0.4.4.1.520.4793.0j17j6j5-1.24.0....0...1c.1.19.psy-ab.Q3u3-UsOp34&amp;pbx=1&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&amp;bvm=bv.48705608,d.aWM&amp;fp=ed9dc457b617ee1d&amp;biw=1280&amp;bih=599\" rel=\"nofollow\">Morsi forced NGO\u2019s out of Egypt<\/a>, raising the ire of Freedom House (NGOs were referred to as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/avalon.law.yale.edu\/sept11\/powell_brief31.asp\" rel=\"nofollow\">force-multipliers<\/a> by Colin Powell, and have been instrumental in executing US policies around the globe).\u00a0 Additionally, <a target=\"_blank\" id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12224\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/13\/world\/middleeast\/egyptian-leader-ousts-military-chiefs.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0\" rel=\"nofollow\">Morsi forced out powerful military figures<\/a> in order to reclaim the military power the army had seized. \u00a0As Juan Cole put it, \u2018<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.juancole.com\/2012\/08\/in-switch-egypts-civilian-president-makes-coup-against-generals.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">a coup against the generals<\/a>\u2019. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news.com.au\/breaking-news\/world\/egypt-president-orders-defence-chief-out\/story-e6frfkui-1226448818186\" rel=\"nofollow\">Israel called the move<\/a> <\/span><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12230\" lang=\"EN\">\u201cInstability in Egypt to threaten Israel ,\u201d and \u201cMuslim Brotherhood on our doorstep.\u201d \u00a0However, \u00a0Morsi made the mistake of appointing <\/span><span lang=\"EN\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-19256730\" rel=\"nofollow\">Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi as military chief<\/a> \u2014 a man with close ties to the U.S. and Saudi Arabia .<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Perhaps his most serious offense was his opposition to a dam which bo<\/span>th Israel and Saudi Arabia favored as they had plans to divert water from the Nile . In 2012, it was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2012\/12\/121217-saudi-arabia-water-grabs-ethiopia\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">reported<\/a> that Saudi Arabia had claimed a stake in the Nile .  Israel \u2019s ambitions went much further back.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12241\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12236\">First initiated by Theodore Herzl in 1903, the diversion plan was dropped due to British and Egyptian opposition to it only to be picked up again in the 1970s. \u00a0At that time, Israeli\u2019s idea was to convince Egypt to divert Nile water to Israel . In 1978, President Anwar Sadat \u201cdeclared in Haifa to the Israeli public that he would transfer Nile water to the Negev . Shortly afterward, in a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, Sadat promised that Nile water would go to Jerusalem . During Mubarak\u2019s presidency, published reports indicated that Israeli experts were helping Ethiopia to plan 40 dams along the Blue Nile .\u201d<a target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" name=\"_ednref2\" href=\"https:\/\/us-mg6.mail.yahoo.com\/neo\/launch?.rand=6soksrmrq6al3#_edn2\" rel=\"nofollow\" id=\"_ednref2\"><\/a><sup><\/sup><sup>[ii]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12245\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12243\">On May 30, 2013, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/egypts-water-war\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Times of Israel<\/a> reported that the construction on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (on the Blue Nile) had sparked a major diplomatic crisis with Egypt . \u00a0The article also reported (citing Al-Arabiya) that Major General Mohammed Ali Bilal, the deputy chief of staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces, had said Egypt was not in a position to confront the project (countries). \u201cThe only solution lies in the US intervening to convince Ethiopia to alleviate the impact of the dam on Egypt .\u201d No such solutions from the U.S. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12251\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12246\">On June 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailynewsegypt.com\/2013\/06\/03\/morsi-meeting-discusses-effects-of-dam\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Morsi met with his cabinet<\/a> to discuss the dam and its implications. Cabinet members were surprised to learn that the meeting was aired live.\u00a0 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/missingpeace.eu\/en\/2013\/06\/egyptian-cabinet-discuss-war-against-israel-over-nile-crisis\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">During the meeting<\/a>, a cabinet member said: \u201cImagine what 80 million of us would do to Israel and America if our water was turned off\u201d. Morsi contended that \u201cWe have very serious measures to protect every drop of Nile water.\u201d The day prior to Morsi\u2019s ouster, on July 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/2013\/07\/02\/in-ethiopia-massive-nile-river-dam-project-inspires-comparison-with-story\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Fox News<\/a> reported that work on the dam was \u201cproceeding apace\u201d, with plans to finish the project in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12282\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12280\">It seems the only \u201cserious measure\u201d undertaken was the ouster of Morsi. With him gone, the military engaged, and the poring in of Saudi money, the dam project will proceed unhindered; blood-diluted Nile water will flow to the enemies of the Egyptian in sink with a current of jubilation by the crowds who \u2018can\u2019t see the forest for the trees\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12278\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12275\"><em><strong>Soraya Sepahpour-Ulrich<\/strong> is an independent researcher with a focus on U.S. foreign policy and the influence of lobby groups.\u00a0<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>During the early years of the Cold War, American spies in Cairo  \u201cengaged in an operation to show Soviet ungodliness\u201d <span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12253\">\u00a0by circulating anti-Islamic literature and attributing it to the Soviets.\u00a0 When the nationalist Gamal Abdel Nasser refused to become America \u2019s man in Egypt , CIA looked for a \u201creligious spellbinder\u201d who could tip the scales of Arab opinion and \u201cdivert the growing stream of anti-American hostility.\u201d The intent was to \u201cgroom a messiah who would start out in Egypt, and then spread his word to Africans and perhaps other Third World peoples\u201d in order to \u201cimmunize them against false prophets,\u201d namely Nasser<sup><\/sup><sup>[1]<\/sup>. Although no \u2018messiah\u2019 was groomed, the CIA did co-opt leaders of the Islamic revival movement known as the Ikhwan, or Muslim Brotherhood and \u201cthe seeds of a furtive relationship between the CIA and the Ikhwan were planted.\u201d In the years ahead, the agency would become a de facto accomplice of the Muslim Brotherhood and its \u201cterrorist\u201d activities<sup><\/sup><sup>[1]<\/sup>.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1373489226569_12263\"><span><a target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" name=\"_edn1\" href=\"https:\/\/us-mg6.mail.yahoo.com\/neo\/launch?.rand=6soksrmrq6al3#_ednref1\" rel=\"nofollow\" id=\"_edn1\"><\/a><sup><\/sup><sup>[i]<\/sup> Frances Stonor Saunders.
