{"id":49081,"date":"2013-07-09T22:09:41","date_gmt":"2013-07-09T21:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/us-israeli-interests-in-the-balance-as-egypt-coup-label-lingers\/49081\/"},"modified":"2013-07-09T22:09:41","modified_gmt":"2013-07-09T21:09:41","slug":"us-israeli-interests-in-the-balance-as-egypt-coup-label-lingers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/us-israeli-interests-in-the-balance-as-egypt-coup-label-lingers\/","title":{"rendered":"US, Israeli Interests in the Balance as Egypt &#039;Coup&#039; Label Lingers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"image-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/sites\/commondreams.org\/files\/imce-images\/weloveegypt.jpg\" title=\"(Photo: Mariam Soliman\/cc\/flickr)\" \/><span class=\"caption\">(Photo: Mariam Soliman\/cc\/flickr)<\/span><\/span>The strategic interests of the U.S. and Israel are on display as the U.S. continues to dodge calling the Egyptian military <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/headline\/2013\/07\/03-1\">ousting<\/a> of President Mohamed Morsi a coup, and Israeli officials mount pressure on the U.S. to not halt its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/wonkblog\/wp\/2013\/07\/09\/the-u-s-gives-egypt-1-5-billion-a-year-in-aid-heres-what-it-does\/\">$1.5 billion in annual aid<\/a> to Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>The White House has avoided using the word &#8220;coup,&#8221; because, as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/07\/09\/egypt-protests-idUSL6N0FE40R20130709\"><em>Reuters<\/em> explained<\/a>, &#8220;calling the military intervention a &#8216;coup&#8217;&#8230;would trigger legal obstacles to continuing aid payments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <em>New York Times<\/em>&#8216; Caucus blog <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/08\/obama-administration-rules-out-suspension-of-aid-to-egypt-in-near-term\/\">adds<\/a> that<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Egypt has been the second-largest recipient of American aid, behind Israel, since 1979, as a reward and incentive for its peace with the Jewish nation, and the military continues to support that treaty.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On Monday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney repeatedly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2013\/07\/08\/press-briefing-press-secretary-jay-carney-07082013\">dodged<\/a> any confirmation that Morsi&#8217;s overthrow was a coup, saying instead the situation in Egypt was &#8220;complex and difficult&#8221; and that the Obama administration has no immediate plans to halt aid to Egypt.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I think it would not be in the best interest of the United States to immediately change our assistance programs to Egypt. We think &#8212; not just I, but we think that it would not be in the best interest of the United States to do that. We are reviewing our obligations under the law and we will be consulting with Congress about the way forward with regards to, specifically, the assistance package that we provide.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The State Department made similar statements on Monday, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/r\/pa\/prs\/dpb\/2013\/07\/211603.htm#EGYPT\">saying<\/a> in a press briefing, &#8220;Our focus is on returning stability to the region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Israel&#8217;s interests in the U.S. maintaining its hefty aid to the Egyptian military prompted &#8220;marathon phone calls&#8221; to U.S. officials this weekend, Israeli newspaper <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/news\/diplomacy-defense\/israel-urged-u-s-not-to-halt-aid-to-egypt-says-top-american-official.premium-1.534651\"><em>Haaretz<\/em> reported<\/a> on Tuesday:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Marathon phone calls about the coup took place between Jerusalem and Washington over the weekend. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Defense Minister Moshe Ya\u2019alon spoke with Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, and National Security Advisor Yaakov Amidror spoke with his White House counterpart, Susan Rice.<\/p>\n<p>The senior American official said the talks were aimed at coordinating U.S. and Israeli positions on the Egyptian crisis. During those calls, and in follow-up conversations afterward, the Israelis warned that cutting military aid to Egypt would likely impact negatively on Israel\u2019s security, especially given the possibility of further security deterioration in Sinai.<\/p>\n<p>They also warned that halting the aid could undermine Israel\u2019s peace treaty with Egypt.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Foreign policy analyst Jim Lobe <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ipsnews.net\/2013\/07\/pro-israel-advocates-push-for-continued-aid-to-egypt\/\">noted<\/a> similar comments from other pro-Israel voices, including the neo-conservative <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>. Lobe <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ipsnews.net\/2013\/07\/pro-israel-advocates-push-for-continued-aid-to-egypt\/\">wrote<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal\u2019s hard-line neo-conservative editorial board stressed Washington had too much at stake to disassociate itself in any way from the military, insisting that \u201ccutting (military aid) off now would be a mistake. Unpopular as America is in Egypt, 1.3 billion dollars in annual military aid buys access with the generals.
