Senegalese authorities say that former Chad President Hissene Habre could face charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and torture.\n<\/p>\n
Mbacke Fall, Senegal’s chief prosecutor, said on Monday that his preliminary investigation suggests there is enough evidence to charge the former ruler with the crimes, the Associated Press reported.\n<\/p>\n
Fall said Habre will appear before judges on Tuesday in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, where he has been living in exile for 22 years after being toppled in a military coup.\n<\/p>\n
Habre was detained in Dakar on Sunday.\n<\/p>\n
Human rights groups have accused Habre of torture or killing up to 40,000 people between 1982 and 1990. The 70 year old has denied the accusations.\n<\/p>\n
Under pressure from the International Court of Justice and campaign groups, Senegalese MPs passed a law in December allowing a special African Union tribunal to be created in the country to try the former leader, who has been dubbed “Africa’s Pinochet.”\n<\/p>\n
It will be the first time the former leader of an African state has been tried by another.\n<\/p>\n
