{"id":45876,"date":"2013-06-27T20:00:38","date_gmt":"2013-06-27T19:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/telecoms-implicated-in-bush-era-domestic-spying-now-starting-privacy-coaltion\/45876\/"},"modified":"2013-06-27T20:00:38","modified_gmt":"2013-06-27T19:00:38","slug":"telecoms-implicated-in-bush-era-domestic-spying-now-starting-privacy-coaltion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/telecoms-implicated-in-bush-era-domestic-spying-now-starting-privacy-coaltion\/","title":{"rendered":"Telecoms Implicated in Bush-Era Domestic Spying Now Starting &#039;Privacy Coaltion&#039;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Politico<\/em> is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/politicoinfluence\/0613\/politicoinfluence11022.html\">reporting<\/a> that a group of leading telecommunications corporations has announced that they are forming a privacy coalition to &#8220;focus on updating U.S. privacy and data security laws.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"image-right\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/sites\/commondreams.org\/files\/imagecache\/headline_image\/article_images\/attnsa.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" class=\"imagecache imagecache-headline_image imagecache-default imagecache-headline_image_default\" width=\"275\" height=\"145\" \/><span class=\"caption\"> Photo: Ken\/cc\/flickr <\/span><\/span>Among the 21st Century Privacy Coalition members are Verizon, AT&amp;T, Comcast and the United States Telecom Association, and &#8220;will be headed by former Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz of Davis Polk &amp; Wardwell LLP and former U.S. Representative Mary Bono Mack of FaegreBD Consulting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/hillicon-valley\/technology\/308063-overnight-tech\"><em>The Hill<\/em> reports<\/a> that<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The group will push for privacy and data security laws that &#8220;better serve consumer expectations as well as technological and competitive changes in the communications marketplace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Remarking on the news of the coalition, Tim Karr of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/freepress.net\">Free Press<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/TimKarr\/status\/350252179623391232\">tweeted<\/a> &#8220;What could possibly go wrong?&#8221; and added:<\/p>\n<p>AT&amp;T was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/cases\/nsa-multi-district-litigation\">sued<\/a> in 2006 for collaborating with the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/nsa-spying\">NSA&#8217;s widespread domestic spying program<\/a> by handing over communications of millions of Americans.<\/p>\n<p>As Robert Reich <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/archive\/2007\/11\/28\/5477\">wrote<\/a> back in 2007:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8230; executives at the nation&#8217;s biggest telecoms &#8212; AT&amp;T, Verizon, and others &#8212; didn&#8217;t blink an eye when the National Security Agency came knocking. You want records of domestic phone calls? Sure, help yourself! Emails? Yeah, we got tons.
