{"id":45017,"date":"2013-06-25T11:00:36","date_gmt":"2013-06-25T10:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/turkish-officer-freed-pending-trial\/45017\/"},"modified":"2013-06-25T11:00:36","modified_gmt":"2013-06-25T10:00:36","slug":"turkish-officer-freed-pending-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/turkish-officer-freed-pending-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkish officer freed pending trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anti-government protestors try to stop riot police before the clash between Riot police and protestors on Taksim square in Istanbul on June 22, 2013.  <\/p>\n<div id=\"divDetailBody\">\n<p>A Turkish police officer who allegedly shot to death a protester during anti-government demonstrations in the capital Ankara has been released pending trial.\n<\/p>\n<p>Ankara\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s Criminal Court rejected lawyers\u00e2\u201e\u00a2 demand on Monday to detain the officer named Ahmet S., ruling that the shooting was \u00c5\u201cwithin the limits of self-defense,\u201d Turkey\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s <i>Hurriyet Daily News<\/i> said.\n<\/p>\n<p>The 26-year-old protester, Ethem Sarisuluk, was shot in the head during a demonstration near Kizilay square on June 1. He died on June 14 after being declared brain dead.\n<\/p>\n<p>Mustafa Sarisuluk, Ethem\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s elder brother, slammed the court decision, describing it as &#8220;unlawful\u201d and \u00c5\u201cinjustice.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In this country, murderers are always freed. This is the last example. My brother was shot to death before the eyes of the world,&#8221; he said. Adding, &#8220;But we will continue our struggle and carry the matter to international platforms in the face of this unlawfulness and injustice.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the same day, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan praised the \u00c5\u201clegendary heroism\u201d of police forces in quelling anti-government protests that have rocked the country for more than three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our police successfully passed a very important, very challenging democracy test,&#8221; Erdogan noted, adding, &#8220;Our police have responded to attacks, provocations without violating the law &#8230; and have written a saga of heroism.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>The unrest in Turkey began on May 31 after police broke up a sit-in at Istanbul&#8217;s Taksim Square to protest against a proposal to demolish Gezi Park.\n<\/p>\n<p>The protesters said Gezi Park, which is a traditional gathering point for rallies and demonstrations as well as a popular tourist destination, is one of Istanbul&#8217;s last green public spaces.\n<\/p>\n<p>The violence turned into nationwide demonstrations against the ruling Justice and Development Party, with police using water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets against demonstrators.\n<\/p>\n<p>Five people, including a police officer, have died in the clashes and more than 5,000 protesters and 600 police officers have been injured.\n<\/p>\n<p>SAB\/HN\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This article originally appeared on: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.presstv.ir\/detail\/2013\/06\/25\/310750\/turkish-officer-freed-pending-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Turkish officer freed pending trial\">Press TV<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anti-government protestors try to stop riot police before the clash between Riot police and protestors on Taksim square in Istanbul on June 22, 2013.
