Qatari ruler Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has officially abdicated power in favor of his son Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.\n<\/p>\n
The 61-year-old emir, who had overthrown his father in a coup in 1995, handed over the power to his 33-year-old son on Tuesday after 18 years of ruling the country.\n<\/p>\n
\u00c5\u201cI announce handing the rule over to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani,\u201d Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani said in a televised speech.\n<\/p>\n
The decision marks the \u00c5\u201cbeginning of a new era, in which a young leadership will hold the banner,\u201d he added.\n<\/p>\n
Tamim is currently the joint commander of Qatari armed forces and the head of the kingdom\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s Olympic committee.\n<\/p>\n
Sources, meanwhile, state that the Qatari emir further plans a major cabinet reshuffle in an effort to bring in a considerable number of younger ministers following the father-to-son power shift.\n<\/p>\n
Qatar\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s international standing has been greatly undermined, particularly across the Muslim world, because of its deep involvement in supporting the foreign-backed militancy against the Syrian government.\n<\/p>\n
