His comments follow reports data gathered in the US-run PRISM program was shared with the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ).<\/p>\n<p>\n  British Foreign Secretary William Hague affirmed that a <i>\u201clot<br \/>\n  of information was shared with the United States,\u201d<\/i> adding<br \/>\n  that the two countries shared <i>&#8220;an exceptional intelligence<br \/>\n  sharing relationship.&#8221;<\/i>\n  <\/p>\n<p>However, Hague would neither confirm nor deny GCHQ, Britain\u2019s<br \/>\n  electronic eavesdropping and security agency, had received<br \/>\n  information clandestinely obtained via the United States National<br \/>\n  Security Agency\u2019s (NSA) \u2018PRISM\u2019 electronic surveillance program.\n  <\/p>\n<p>The Foreign Secretary is set to appear before the House of<br \/>\n  Commons to provide a statement on Monday following media reports<br \/>\n  that since June 2010, GCHQ has had access to PRISM, which grants<br \/>\n  the NSA a direct line to data stored on the servers of Google,<br \/>\n  Facebook, Apple, Yahoo and five other tech giants.\n  <\/p>\n<p>GCHQ generated 197 intelligence reports from data obtained via<br \/>\n  the program last year, allegedly allowing the agency to bypass<br \/>\n  the legal checks normally required to obtain such information.\n  <\/p>\n<p>The GCHQ was also reportedly given access to so-called \u201ctelephony<br \/>\n  metadata\u201d culled from the telephone records of millions of US<br \/>\n  customers of Verizon \u2014 one of the largest telecommunication<br \/>\n  companies in the United States in a separate NSA-run program.\n  <\/p>\n<p>The Foreign Secretary dismissed as <i>\u201cnonsense\u201d<\/i> claims that<br \/>\n  GCHQ <i>\u201care sitting around working out how to circumvent a UK<br \/>\n  law with another agency.\u201d<\/i>\n  <\/p>\n<p>Hague continued that any information arriving in the UK from the<br \/>\n  US is <i>\u201cgoverned by our laws,\u201d<\/i> insisting that efforts to<br \/>\n  thwart terrorism did not endanger civil liberties. \u00a0\n  <\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;If you are a law-abiding citizen of this country &#8230; you&#8217;ll<br \/>\n  never be aware of all the things those (intelligence) agencies<br \/>\n  are doing to stop your identity being stolen or to stop a<br \/>\n  terrorist blowing you up tomorrow,&#8221;<\/i> Reuters cites Hague as<br \/>\n  saying.<br \/>\n  <br \/><i><br \/>&#8220;But if you are a would-be terrorist or the center of a criminal<br \/>\n  network or a foreign intelligence agency trying to spy on Britain<br \/>\n  you should be worried because that is what we work on and we are<br \/>\n  on the whole quite good at it,&#8221;<\/i> he continued.\n  <\/p>\n<p>The Foreign Secretary stressed that any intelligence gathering<br \/>\n  was <i>\u201cauthorized, necessary, proportionate and targeted,\u201d<br \/>\n  adding that he personally signed off on GCHQ intercepts \u201cmost<br \/>\n  days of the week.\u201d<\/i><br \/>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Britain's Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in Cheltenham (Reuters)\" src=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/files\/news\/1f\/5b\/50\/00\/-1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\n  However, Business Secretary Vince Cable, speaking on Sky News\u2019<br \/>\n  Murnaghan program, said that PRISM may have allowed the<br \/>\n  government to operate a covert sort of \u2018snoopers charter\u2019 by the<br \/>\n  back door.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Douglas Alexander, the opposition Labour party&#8217;s spokesman for<br \/>\n  foreign affairs, expressed his intention to ask Hague in the<br \/>\n  House of Commons how exactly his department oversees the legal<br \/>\n  frameworks governing such intelligence gathering<br \/>\n  operations. \u00a0\n  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is vital that the Government now reassures people who are<br \/>\n  rightly concerned about these reports,&#8221; Alexander said in a<br \/>\n  statement.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Parliament&#8217;s Intelligence and Security Committee Committee (ISC)<br \/>\n  has demanded a report from GCHQ on the matter <i>\u201cand will decide<br \/>\n  what further action needs to be taken as soon as it receives that<br \/>\n  information,&#8221;<\/i> chairman Malcom Rifkind said.\n  <\/p>\n<p>ISC Committee members are set to discuss the issue with US<br \/>\n  security officials during a planned visit to Washington on<br \/>\n  Monday.<br \/>\n  <\/p>\n<p>This article originally appeared on: <a href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/news\/hague-prism-intelligence-sharing-437\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"PRISM fallout: Hague says UK citizens have \u2018nothing to fear\u2019 from GCHQ surveillance\">RT<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Law-abiding citizens need not fear intelligence sharing between the US and UK, Britain\u2019s Foreign Secretary promised.
