{"id":403334,"date":"2019-04-19T01:08:21","date_gmt":"2019-04-19T00:08:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/prison-planet-com-historic-mural-removed-from-school-because-it-only-features-white-children\/"},"modified":"2019-04-19T01:08:21","modified_gmt":"2019-04-19T00:08:21","slug":"prison-planet-com-historic-mural-removed-from-school-because-it-only-features-white-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/prison-planet-com-historic-mural-removed-from-school-because-it-only-features-white-children\/","title":{"rendered":"Prison Planet.com \u00bb Historic Mural Removed From School Because it Only Features White Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>      <!-- START CONTENT --><\/p>\n<p>Painting taken down because it doesn\u2019t reflect modern day \u201cdiversity\u201d of Chicago<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paul Joseph Watson<\/strong><br \/>PrisonPlanet.com<br \/>April 18, 2019<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prisonplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/180419mural1.jpg\" alt=\"null\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>A historic mural dating from 1937 was removed from a middle school in Chicago because it only showed white children and failed to reflect the school\u2019s modern day \u201cdiversity\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The mural was taken down at Percy Julian Middle School in Oak Park after the school\u2019s \u201cSocial Justice Club\u201d and \u201cDiversity Committee\u201d complained that it was upsetting to students of color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have had students approach me pointing out that this picture does not represent our student body or the diversity of Oak Park,\u201d Principal Todd Fitzgerald wrote in an email to staff.<\/p>\n<p>The mural \u2013 entitled \u2018Child and Sports\u2013Winter\u2019 was originally painted by Ethel Spears and was previously displayed in Lowell Elementary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis mural made students feel invisible because it doesn\u2019t reflect the current student body,\u201d Brito Millan said. \u201cHow can a student learn in a healthy environment when they don\u2019t feel they are being seen?\u201d<!-- [donotprint] --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ppani\">\n<li>A d v e r t i s e m e n t<\/li>\n<li\/><\/ul>\n<p><!-- [\/donotprint] --><\/p>\n<p>However, David Sokol, a retired professor of American art history at the University of Illinois at Chicago, described the removal of the painting as a \u201cmodern-day book burning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is nothing offensive with the mural; it just shows all white kids playing,\u201d said Sokol. \u201cJust because it doesn\u2019t have any black kids, doesn\u2019t make it offensive. It doesn\u2019t display any stereotypes at all. That\u2019s how Oak Park looked back then.
