The act allows Home Secretary Sajid Javid to designate an area, dependent on parliamentary approval.<\/p>\n<p>There are exemptions written into the legislation to protect those that have legitimate reasons to be in \u2018designated areas,\u2019 but campaigners fear that varying interpretations of the new laws could see journalists being locked up.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"media__youtube-frame lazyload\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300px\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tOzZDsTZUG0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Free press and free speech groups, including Reporters Without Borders and Index, <a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/news\/nine-organisations-call-house-lords-amend-threatening-counter-terrorism-and-border-security-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warn<\/a> that due to the vague nature of the new counter-terrorism act, it could lead to a crackdown on journalists\u2019 freedom to travel if they fail to answer questions.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>A journalist taking a domestic flight could be stopped without any suspicion of wrongdoing. It would be an offence for the journalist not to answer questions or hand over materials, with no protection for confidential sources.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A UK cross-party committee <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/jt201719\/jtselect\/jtrights\/1616\/161603.htm#_idTextAnchor000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report <\/a>on human rights last year, warned the government that the new powers on counter-terrorism risk crossing the line on human rights, restrict freedom of speech and place obstacles on access to information.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Think your friends would be interested?
