Congress has finally grown a spine.<\/p>\n

For the first time in more than forty years, Congress has invoked the War Powers Resolution<\/a> to demand that the US end its assistance to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in their war against Houthi rebels in Yemen.\u00a0 The US has been involved in the Saudi-led war without the authorization of Congress as mandated by the Constitution.<\/p>\n

The resolution<\/a> went to President Donald Trump\u2019s desk on Thursday.\u00a0 As I write this, Trump has not yet vetoed the resolution.\u00a0 Trump, however, has said that he will, and has been saying it since at least March<\/a> of last year.\u00a0 The Administration argues that, contrary to the resolution\u2019s language, the US is not involved in \u201chostilities\u201d<\/a> in Yemen because the US is not bombing the country.\u00a0 Nor are US troops on the ground.\u00a0 The US extends limited \u201cnon-combat support\u201d by providing arms, intelligence, and targeting advice.\u00a0 (In November, the US announced that it would cease in-flight refueling of coalition warplanes.)\u00a0 Furthermore, Article II\u2019s \u201cCommander in Chief\u201d power gives the president Constitutional authority for these activities.<\/p>\n

The UN calls Yemen the \u201cworld\u2019s worst humanitarian disaster.\u201d\u00a0 As many as 85,000 children may have died during the war from starvation and disease, according to the international NGO Save the Children.\u00a0 Seventeen million Yemenis are at risk of famine.\u00a0 A Saudi blockade keeps drastically needed…<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
