I don\u2019t like flying.\u00a0 I consider it unnatural, unhealthy and fraught with peril.\u00a0 But I do it all the time.\u00a0 For me, it\u2019s either fly or take an ox cart.<\/p>\n

In fact, I\u2019ve been flying since I was six years old \u2013 from New York to Paris on a lumbering Boeing Stratocruiser, a converted, double-decker WWII B-29 heavy bomber. \u00a0I even had a sleeping berth.\u00a0 So much for progress.<\/p>\n

Lots can go wrong in the air.\u00a0 Modern aircraft have thousands of obscure parts.\u00a0 If any one of them malfunctions, the aircraft can be crippled or crash.\u00a0 Add pilot error, dangerous weather, air traffic control mistakes,\u00a0mountains where they are not supposed to be, air to air collisions, sabotage and hijacking.

I vividly recall flying over the snow-capped Alps in the late 1940\u2019s aboard an old Italian three-motor airliner with its port engine burning, and the Italian crew panicking and crossing themselves.<\/p>\n
