Ha ha, of course not; they were speaking in support of <strong>Fox<\/strong> host Tucker Carlson, who is facing some pressure from advertisers after the group Media Matters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/research\/2019\/03\/11\/unearthed-audio-shows-tucker-carlson-using-white-nationalist-rhetoric-and-making-racist-remarks\/223105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released audio<\/a> of him on shock radio from a few years back, saying things like Iraq is a \u201ccrappy place filled with a bunch of, you know, semiliterate primitive monkeys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For champions of civility like Stephens, the problem for public discourse is not this sort of statement, but any suggestion that the public could be better served. As Arizona activist Imraan Siddiqi put it in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/imraansiddiqi\/status\/1105685725855387648\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">response tweet<\/a> to Stephens:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Ilhan quoted a Diddy lyric and you wrote 10 articles about it. Tucker called Iraqis monkeys\u2014and those are &#8220;ideas,&#8221; to be &#8220;rebutted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <strong>Times<\/strong>man isn&#8217;t the only one engaged in Carlson rehabilitation. The <strong>Washington Post<\/strong>, having already gifted readers with a Kathleen Parker column (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/tucker-carlson-dont-bow-to-the-mob\/2019\/03\/12\/3a913fe2-4505-11e9-8aab-95b8d80a1e4f_story.html?utm_term=.752461d67575\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3\/12\/19<\/a>) headed &#8220;Tucker Carlson, Don&#8217;t Bow to the Mob,&#8221; published a March 13 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/arts-entertainment\/2019\/03\/13\/advertisers-ditch-tucker-carlson-jeanine-pirros-fox-news-shows-protesters-urge-companies-join-them\/?utm_term=.6584758619b0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news report<\/a> that explained, &#8220;In one set of recordings, Carlson made controversial statements about child rape and comments that could be construed as misogynistic.&#8221; Which was followed immediately by Carlson&#8217;s quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>If you\u2019re talking to a feminist and she\u2019s giving you, \u2018Well, you know men really need to be more sensitive,\u2019 no actually, men don\u2019t need to be more sensitive. You just need to be quiet and do what you\u2019re told.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I reckon that <em>could<\/em> be construed as misogynistic, as could, just possibly, if one were inclined, Carlson&#8217;s comment that &#8220;I love women, but they&#8217;re extremely primitive, they&#8217;re basic, they&#8217;re not that hard to understand.&#8221; (The <strong>Post<\/strong> later edited the story to give it a different dodge, referring to &#8220;comments that some have called misogynistic.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>As for his statements on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/research\/2019\/03\/10\/unearthed-audio-tucker-carlson-makes-numerous-misogynistic-and-perverted-comments\/223092\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">child rape<\/a>, they&#8217;re only &#8220;controversial&#8221; if one imagines a substantial block of folks that share his view that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/warren-jeffs-child-bride-horrors-mormon-sect-leader-elissa-wall-a8219246.html\">Warren Jeffs<\/a> should be free. The former head of the breakaway Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Jeffs is serving a life sentence for assault and accomplice to rape for, for example, &#8220;arranging&#8221; a &#8220;marriage&#8221; between a 14-year-old girl and her 19-year-old cousin.
