As Justin Trudeau lectures audiences on the need to uphold Venezuela\u2019s constitution the Liberals have recognized a completely illegitimate president in Honduras. What\u2019s more, they\u2019ve formally allied with that government in demanding Venezuela\u2019s president follow their (<a href=\"https:\/\/venezuelanalysis.com\/analysis\/14304\">incorrect<\/a>) reading of that country\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2017 Ottawa\u2019s anti-Venezuela \u201cLima Group\u201d ally Juan Orlando Hernandez (JOH) defied the Honduran constitution to run for a second term. At Hernandez\u2019 request the four Supreme Court members appointed by his National Party <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/apr\/24\/honduran-judges-throw-out-single-term-limit-on-presidency\">overruled an article<\/a> in the constitution explicitly prohibiting re-election.<\/p>\n<p>JOH then \u2018won\u2019 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-honduras-election\/honduran-president-sworn-in-amid-protests-after-election-chaos-idUSKBN1FG0NL\">highly questionable<\/a>\u00a0 poll. With 60 per cent of votes counted opposition candidate Salvador Nasralla lead by five-points. The electoral council then went silent for 36 hours and when reporting resumed JOH had a small lead.<\/p>\n<p>In the three weeks between the election and JOH\u2019s official proclamation as president, government forces killed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/jan\/02\/us-silent-as-honduras-protesters-killed-in-post-election-violence\">at least 30<\/a> pro-democracy demonstrators in the Central American country of nine million. More than a thousand were detained under a post-election state of emergency. Many of those jailed for protesting the electoral fraud, including prominent activist <a href=\"http:\/\/canadahondurasmonitor.ca\/tag\/la-tolva\/\">Edwin Espinal<\/a>, who is married to Canadian human rights campaigner Karen Spring, remain in jail.<\/p>\n<p>Ottawa immediately endorsed the electoral farce in Honduras.
