Robert Francis \u201cBeto\u201d O\u2019Rourke (D-TX) on Wednesday evening after he told <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> that he was \u201cborn\u201d to run for president.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Rourke <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2019\/03\/beto-orourke-cover-story?verso=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">told<\/a> <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>, \u201cYou can probably tell that I want to run\u2026 I do. I think I\u2019d be good at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to be in it,\u201d O\u2019Rourke said. \u201cMan, I\u2019m just born to be in it, and want to do everything I humanly can for this country at this moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hours after <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> published its fawning cover story, O\u2019Rourke confirmed to KTSM in Texas that he would announce on Thursday that he is running for president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really proud of what El Paso did and what El Paso represents,\u201d O\u2019Rourke reportedly <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/amp\/s\/www.ktsm.com\/amp\/news\/politics\/beto-o-rourke-is-running-for-president-in-2020-ktsm-confirms\/1846804405\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">texted<\/a> the station.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s a big part of why I\u2019m running. This city is the best example of this country at its best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The gushing <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> profile also framed O\u2019Rourke as someone who, in contrast to President Donald Trump, \u201ccan appear almost too innocent\u201d and \u201cdecent\u201d to be a politiician:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>But unlike Trump, O\u2019Rourke can appear almost too innocent to be a politician\u2014too decent, too wholesome, the very reason he became popular also the same reason he could be crucified on the national stage. I tell O\u2019Rourke that perhaps he\u2019s simply too normal to be president. \u201cWhether you meant it or not, I take that as a compliment,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>O\u2019Rourke\u2019s critics on the left immediately pointed to his \u201cwhite privilege\u201d and mocked his \u201cweird as hell\u201d \u201cMessiah-esque\u201d tone that they predicted \u201cwill not serve him well\u201d in a presidential run.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;I&#8217;m just born to be in it&#8221; is peak, white male privilege.
