The first<br \/>\n  is a written psychological test, followed by medical checks to<br \/>\n  find traces of illegal drugs in their bodies.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  If experts find schoolchildren are using illegal drugs, they<br \/>\n  would be sent to a rehab centre.<span>\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Children younger than 15 will need the consent of their parents<br \/>\n  before the tests can be carried out.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Many Russian regions have already introduced tests at a local<br \/>\n  level. Everywhere the tests for illegal drugs are voluntary. The<br \/>\n  federal law was drafted in November last year and passed by<br \/>\n  parliament in late May this year.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The anti-drug program has already caused controversy \u2014 in some<br \/>\n  places parents were asked to sign their consent but were not told<br \/>\n  the details of the test. In others, critics pointed at the<br \/>\n  insufficient protection of the highly sensitive information and<br \/>\n  potential damage if the results of the tests (or even the names<br \/>\n  of those who refused to take them) become public.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Some also pointed at the apparently lax approach by the experts \u2014<br \/>\n  one of the questions was reportedly a direct \u201chave you ever<br \/>\n  inhaled gasoline or acetone for the sake of unusual experience\u2019 \u2014<br \/>\n  something that young children might see as an instruction, rather<br \/>\n  than a warning.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  According to a recent poll among Russians aged 11 to 24, about a<br \/>\n  quarter had tried illegal drugs usually between the ages of 15<br \/>\n  and 16.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The overall number of drug addicts is difficult to estimate \u2014<br \/>\n  while the number of officially registered patients in rehabs and<br \/>\n  clinics is about 500,000, experts estimate that the real number<br \/>\n  of people who regularly use illegal drugs is between between two<br \/>\n  and two-and-a-half million.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Russia<span> has a fairly strict drug policy and President<br \/>\n  Vladimir Putin again spoke against the so called \u201csoft drugs\u201d in<br \/>\n  a recent speech saying that their legalization in certain<br \/>\n  countries was \u201c<i>a dangerous path<\/i>\u201d.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>This article originally appeared on: <a href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/politics\/drug-tests-students-schoolchildren-372\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Russia introduces drug tests for schoolchildren\">RT<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Vladimir Putin has signed into law a bill detailing the psychological and medical tests on young people suspected of drug abuse.
