{"id":399177,"date":"2019-03-12T16:40:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T15:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/may-speaks-as-british-lawmakers-prepare-to-vote-on-her-new-deal-watch-live-rt-uk-news\/"},"modified":"2019-03-12T16:40:00","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T15:40:00","slug":"may-speaks-as-british-lawmakers-prepare-to-vote-on-her-new-deal-watch-live-rt-uk-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/may-speaks-as-british-lawmakers-prepare-to-vote-on-her-new-deal-watch-live-rt-uk-news\/","title":{"rendered":"May speaks as British lawmakers prepare to vote on her new deal (WATCH LIVE) \u2014 RT UK News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2019.03\/thumbnail\/5c87c30bfc7e932b638b465d.JPG\" \/><\/p>\n<p>        British Prime Minister Theresa May faces a day of reckoning as MPs vote on her \u201cnew improved\u201d Brexit deal on Tuesday evening, with just 17 days until the UK is scheduled to leave the European Union.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>May\u2019s deal and her authority on Brexit remain in the balance, with prospects of her securing the backing of parliamentarians fading fast and a no-deal Brexit scenario growing ever more likely.\u00a0The last meaningful vote took place on January 15 and was rejected by 432 votes to 202.<\/p>\n<p>Opening the Brexit debate up, the prime minister struggled terribly with her voice, to bring back memories of her nightmare speech at the 2017 Tory Conference, when she was hit with a severely sore throat.<\/p>\n<p>May warned that failure to vote for the deal could lead to there being no Brexit at all, in what may be seen as a plea to Tory Brexiteers and Labour MPs in &#8216;Leave-supporting&#8217; constituencies in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>On the issue of delaying Brexit,\u00a0May claimed that\u00a0the EU\u00a0may insist on\u00a0a second referendum in exchange for extending\u00a0Article 50.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"media__youtube-frame lazyload\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300px\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b2Oz1g1Qr8U\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, responding to the prime minister&#8217;s statement slammed the Brexit deal, claiming <em>&#8220;on the substance, nothing has changed.&#8221;<\/em> He told the House that his party would be voting against May&#8217;s agreement as it would make British citizens poorer.<\/p>\n<p>The ERG, the hardline Brexiteer group who have pushed for the complete removal or significant legal changes to the Irish backstop are reportedly poised to vote May\u2019s deal down.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/453613-cox-bollocks-brexit-snow\/\">READ MORE:\u00a0\u2018Bollocks\u2019: UK top lawyer slams British journalist who claimed he found PM&#8217;s Brexit deal invalid<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Times\u2019 deputy political editor, Sam Coates, reports that the ERG\u2019s lawyers at <em>\u201cStar Chamber\u201d<\/em> have concluded that the prime minister\u2019s <em>\u201cimproved\u201d<\/em> proposal <em>\u201cdoes not provide any exit mechanism from the protocol [the Irish backstop].\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The DUP\u2019s leader Arlene Foster has revealed via social media, that her party will vote against May\u2019s deal, claiming that <em>\u201cthe risks remain\u201d<\/em> as the UK would be unable to<em> \u201clawfully exit the backstop were it to be activated.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are already\u00a0requests for the prime minister to call a general election if she loses the meaningful vote tonight. Tory MP Charles Walker has claimed on BBC Radio 4&#8217;s World at One programme that May requires\u00a0<em>&#8220;a new mandate for the sake of the country&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; adding <em>&#8220;We cannot go on trying to govern like this.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A series of political journalists are also predicting the downfall of Theresa\u00a0May. Lionel Barber, editor of the Financial Times, has taken to Twitter to suggest that all options are\u00a0<em>&#8220;up for grabs including PM job and general election.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\"><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here we go.
