Guantanamo Bay\u2019s medical team is now force-feeding 41 of the 166 prisoners at the US detention facility. With four detainees in hospital, the strike shows no signs of abating a month after President Obama again pledged to close the base.<\/p>\n
\n The latest press release from \n The practice of force-feeding \n Human Rights Watch (HRW) \n \u00a0\u201cI can\u2019t describe how
\n the facility reported the rise in the number of inmates receiving
\n enteral feeds, up from the previous 39. The report also claims
\n that the four prisoners currently undergoing treatment in a
\n detainee hospital are not in critical condition.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\n the prisoners as a way of avoiding the political ramifications of
\n their death has been condemned as<\/span> \u201ccruel, inhuman, and degrading
\n treatment,\u201d<\/i> which is
\n illegal under international law.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\n brought the issue to the attention of the US government back in
\n May in a joint letter to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel. The
\n rights group detailed the demeaning process by which a detainee
\n is<\/span> \u201cstrapped into a chair
\n with restraints on his legs, arms, body, and sometimes head,
\n immobilizing him.\u201d<\/i>\n<\/p>\n
\n painful it is to be force-fed this way. As it was thrust in, it
\n made me feel like throwing up. I wanted to vomit, but I couldn\u2019t.
\n There was agony in my chest, throat and stomach. I had never
\n experienced such pain before,\u201d<\/i> hunger-striker Samir Naji al Hasan Moqbel
\n told HRW, relating the horrors of Gitmo\u2019s force-feeding
\n room.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
