American teachers are part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2019\/02\/26\/pers-f26.html\">growing global movement<\/a> against government austerity and social inequality.<\/p>\n<p>Now in the seventh day of their strike, 3,000 teachers in <strong>Oakland, California<\/strong> are in the forefront. Crucially, educators there have formed a rank-and-file strike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/OaklandRankAndFile\/\">committee<\/a>to assert the interests of teachers independent of the union and fight to broaden their strike by reaching out statewide and nationally to prepare a general strike against the bipartisan attack on public education.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageFull\" style=\"width:480px; oveflow:hidden;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/asset\/a16df36a-9a9b-4e97-9279-3c8859e85c8D\/image.jpg?rendition=image480\" srcset=\"\/asset\/a16df36a-9a9b-4e97-9279-3c8859e85c8D\/image.jpg?rendition=image960 2x\" width=\"480\" style=\"width:480px;\" \/><span>Teachers at Kentucky state capitol in Frankfort (Source: KEA)<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Thousands of teachers in <strong>Kentucky<\/strong> carried out a sickout and demonstration at the state capitol in Frankfort to defend pensions, resuming the protests which they carried out last March and April of last year.
