Pres. Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cState of the (Dis)Union\u201d speech on February 5th\u00a0<\/sup>was marked by a remarkable incident that did not take place.\u00a0\u00a0He made the following declaration about his administration\u2019s intentions regarding Venezuela:<\/p>\n

Two weeks ago, the United States officially recognized the legitimate government of Venezuela, and its new interim President, Juan Guaid\u00f3.<\/p>\n

We\u00a0stand with the Venezuelan people in their noble quest for freedom \u2014 and we condemn the brutality of the Maduro regime, whose socialist\u00a0\u00a0policies\u00a0have turned that nation from being the wealthiest in South America into a state of abject poverty and despair.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Those assembled in the House of Representatives broke out in spirited applause, with Republicans shouting, \u201cHard Coup, Hard Coup,\u201d and many Democrats responding with calls for \u201cSoft Coup, Soft Coup.\u201d\u00a0Others sat on their hands silently mouthing \u201cNo Coup, No Coup.\u201d<\/p>\n

While actual calls for a coup \u2013 hard, soft or none at all \u2014 did not actually accompany Trump\u2019s remarks, all those in Congress that night knew that the Trump administration was orchestrating a coup in Venezuela and, pathetically, most of those in attendance \u2014 Republicans and Democrats \u2014 were in support of such an illegal action.<\/p>\n

And Trump, never missing an opportunity to attack a political enemy real or imagined, went after Americans\u2019 growing recognition that \u201csocialism\u201d represents a valid alternative to the tyranny of 1 percent capitalism:<\/p>\n
