DC Comics \u2013 home of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman \u2013 has shelved plans for a series that would see Jesus Christ return to Earth and \u201cset the gospel straight,\u201d after an outcry from American Christians.<\/p>\n
The series depicted Jesus as a clueless failure, sent back to Earth by God after his untimely capture and crucifixion the first time around. Forced to share an apartment with DC\u2019s Sun Man, Jesus learns to toughen up and fight crime, and sets out to ensure that his modern-day followers stick to his father\u2019s message.<\/p>\n
Some Christians weren\u2019t too happy. Televangelist Pat Robertson\u2019s CBN network called the series<\/a>\u201ccloser to blasphemous than biblical,\u201d<\/em> and a petition<\/a> to shut down the comic attracted more than 234,000 signatures. \u201cThis blasphemous content should not be tolerated,\u201d<\/em> read the petition. \u201cJesus Christ is the Son of God. His story should not be ridiculed for the sake of selling comic books.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Great news! The blasphemous “Second Coming” comic deriding Jesus has been cancelled. Russell and Pace refused to make the changes, and are now seeking another publisher for the comic.<\/p>\n \u201cI think the religious fundamentalists and critics who are trying to stop Second Coming aren\u2019t interested in protecting Christ so much as their ability to control his narrative,\u201d<\/em> Russell told Syfy Wire<\/a>. \u201cThey probably (correctly) suspect that it\u2019s not Christ who\u2019s being parodied, but themselves and how they\u2019ve twisted his teachings of mercy for the powerless into a self-serving tool of the powerful.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Think your friends would be interested?
