{"id":395916,"date":"2019-02-12T03:47:28","date_gmt":"2019-02-12T02:47:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/study-links-abuse-deterrent-oxycontin-with-rise-in-hepatitis-c-infections\/"},"modified":"2019-02-12T03:47:28","modified_gmt":"2019-02-12T02:47:28","slug":"study-links-abuse-deterrent-oxycontin-with-rise-in-hepatitis-c-infections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/study-links-abuse-deterrent-oxycontin-with-rise-in-hepatitis-c-infections\/","title":{"rendered":"Study links abuse-deterrent OxyContin with rise in hepatitis C infections"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3 class=\"nomargin\">\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2>Study links abuse-deterrent OxyContin with rise in hepatitis C infections<\/h2>\n<h5>\n<p>    By<br \/>\n    Brian Dixon<br \/>\n    <br \/>11 February 2019<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<p>According to a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthaffairs.org\/doi\/full\/10.1377\/hlthaff.2018.05232\">study<\/a> published in <em>Health Affairs<\/em> last week, Purdue Pharma\u2019s switch to a new abuse-deterrent formulation of OxyContin in 2010 led to a rise in hepatitis C infections as addicts switched to injecting heroin.<\/p>\n<p>While prior research has established the connection between the introduction of the abuse-deterrent formulation of OxyContin and a spike in heroin overdoses, the <em>Health Affairs<\/em> article, written by researchers from the Rand Corporation and the Wharton School, examined the relationship between the introduction of the reformulation and hepatitis C infection rates.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers noted that while opioid overdoses and addiction steadily rose in the 2000s, the rate of hepatitis C infections declined or remained stagnant\u2014until 2010, the year that the abuse-deterrent formulation of OxyContin became available.
