-->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a report on January 16, 2019 ranking \u201cvaccine hesitancy\u201d as one of the top \u201c10 Threats to Global Health in 2019,\u201d alongside air pollution and climate change, noncommunicable diseases, global influenza pandemic, antimicrobial resistance and infectious diseases such as ebola, dengue fever and HIV.<sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">1<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Throughout history, the greatest contributors to disease and early death in human populations have been poverty, poor sanitation and poor nutrition,<sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">2<\/span>,<\/sup><sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">3<\/span>,<\/sup><sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">4<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0but infectious diseases with pharmaceutical solutions dominated this list.<\/p>\n<p>And, there was no mention of the major opioid addiction crisis crippling and killing tens of thousands of people in the U.S. and Europe,<sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">5<\/span>,<\/sup><sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">6<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0or the iatrogenic medical error epidemic that every year claims more than 750,000 lives in Europe<sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">7<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0and 250,000 lives in the U.S., where it is the third leading cause of death.<sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">8<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The immediate mainstream media response to the WHO\u2019s announcement was to focus on \u201cvaccine hesitancy,\u201d with The Editorial Board of The New York Times declaring January 19 that \u201canti-vaxxers\u201d are \u201cthe enemy\u201d and calling on the U.S. government to \u201cget tough\u201d by waging a \u201cbold and aggressive\u201d pro-vaccine campaign that includes \u201ctightening restrictions around how much leeway states can grant families that want to skip essential vaccines.\u201d<sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">9<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>By January 23, The Hill announced Washington state had declared a state of emergency because of 23 cases of measles reported in an \u201canti-vaccination community\u201d near Portland, Oregon,<sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">10<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0and there was a public call in the U.K. for social media platforms to \u201cclamp down on fake news\u201d and censor \u201cmisleading information and negative messaging around vaccination.\u201d<sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">11<\/span>,<\/sup><sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">12<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The
