Venezuela remains in a state of crisis as opposition forces \u2014 with the backing of the United States \u2014 attempt to unseat the government of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro. On Thursday, Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino L\u00f3pez said the military continues to stand by Maduro. His remarks came one day after President Trump announced that the US would recognize opposition leader Juan Guaid\u00f3 as Venezuela\u2019s new leader. Guaid\u00f3, the new head of Venezuela\u2019s National Assembly, declared himself president on Wednesday during a large opposition protest. Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro has ordered the US to remove all of its diplomats from Venezuela, but Washington is ignoring the request, claiming Maduro no longer has authority to take such action. We speak to two long-term observers of Venezuelan politics: Venezuelan-born <\/span>NYU<\/span> <\/span>professor Alejandro Velasco and Steve Ellner, who lives in Venezuela, where he taught for several decades.<\/p>\n
