There was no evidence the alleged attack was successful, the DNC reportedly said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The DNC says an unsuccessful cyberattack targeted it after the 2018 midterms\u2014and blames one of the same Russian groups that struck in 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LTgFqQTTmk\">https:\/\/t.co\/LTgFqQTTmk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Wall Street Journal (@WSJ) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WSJ\/status\/1086311821269712897?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 18, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the filing, the DNC said it believed that a <em>\u201cRussian hacking group\u201d<\/em> called <em>\u201cCozy Bear\u201d<\/em> was <em>\u201clikely\u201d<\/em> behind the phishing emails, which purported to come from State Department officials. This conclusion is apparently based on the timing and content of the email matching what cybersecurity company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fireeye.com\/blog\/threat-research\/2018\/11\/not-so-cozy-an-uncomfortable-examination-of-a-suspected-apt29-phishing-campaign.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FireEye declared<\/a> to be a <em>\u201cCozy Bear\u201d<\/em> campaign at the time. The DNC\u2019s legal filing did not provide forensic evidence to back up the claim, according to the WSJ.<\/p>\n<p>CNN reported that the emails contained a PDF attachment that would have infected the recipient computer with malware if opened, citing anonymous sources within the DNC.<\/p>\n<p>According to FireEye, <em>\u201cCozy Bear\u201d<\/em> attempted phishing attacks against more than 20 of the company\u2019s clients, including the US military, police, transportation companies and government.<\/p>\n<p>In July last year, days before the Helsinki summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, special counsel Robert Mueller announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/432985-jury-indicts-12-russians\/\">charges against twelve Russian<\/a><em>\u201cmilitary intelligence\u201d<\/em> operatives for allegedly hacking into the DNC during the 2016 presidential election campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Actual DNC servers were never examined by the FBI, however, which instead accepted the word of the DNC security contractor, CyberStrike. In August 2018, it announced that <em>\u201cRussians\u201d<\/em> had tried to hack its voter database, only to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/436678-dnc-false-alarm-hack-voters\/\">backtrack a day later<\/a> and explain it as a misunderstood cybersecurity test.<\/p>\n<p>In December last year, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) admitted that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/445564-gop-campaign-group-suffered-hack\/\">unknown hackers had access<\/a> to four of their email accounts since April. The House Republican leadership only found out about the hack when it was reported in the press, however, as the NRCC was investigating the breach internally with the help of a cybersecurity contractor and elected to say nothing for months, supposedly out of fear of compromising the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The name of that contractor?
