Former secretary of state and self-described \u201chair icon\u201d Hillary Clinton perfectly distilled the bipartisan freakout into a<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HillaryClinton\/status\/1076128583419088896\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">single tweet<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, accusing Trump of \u201cisolationism\u201d and \u201cplaying into Russia and Iran\u2019s hands.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michelle Flournoy, the DC apparatchik who would have been Hillary\u2019s secretary of defense,<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/12\/21\/679056328\/mattis-was-a-stabilizing-force-to-trump-administration-flournoy-says\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slammed<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the pull-out as \u201cforeign policy malpractice,\u201d while Hillary\u2019s successor at the State Department, John Kerry, threw bits of red meat to the Russiagate-crazed Democratic base by<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/john-kerry-trump-apos-move-204157874.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">branding<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Trump\u2019s decision \u201ca Christmas gift to Putin.\u201d From the halls of Congress to the K Street corridors of Gulf-funded think tanks, a chorus of protest proclaimed that removing U.S. troops from Syria would simultaneously abet Iran and bring ISIS back from the grave.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Yet few of those thundering condemnations of the president\u2019s move seemed able to explain just why a few thousand U.S. troops had been deployed to the Syrian hinterlands in the first place. If the mission was to destroy ISIS, then why did ISIS rise in the first place? And why was the jihadist organization still festering right in the midst of the U.S. military occupation? <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Too many critics of withdrawal had played central roles in the Syrian crisis to answer these questions honestly. They had either served as media cheerleaders for intervention, or crafted the policies aimed at collapsing Syria\u2019s government that fueled the rise of ISIS.
