{"id":390811,"date":"2018-12-28T09:07:40","date_gmt":"2018-12-28T08:07:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/us-explorer-completes-first-ever-solo-trek-across-antarctica-rt-usa-news\/"},"modified":"2018-12-28T09:07:40","modified_gmt":"2018-12-28T08:07:40","slug":"us-explorer-completes-first-ever-solo-trek-across-antarctica-rt-usa-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/us-explorer-completes-first-ever-solo-trek-across-antarctica-rt-usa-news\/","title":{"rendered":"US explorer completes first-ever solo trek across Antarctica \u2014 RT USA News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2018.12\/thumbnail\/5c249cfedda4c874158b4579.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>        An Oregon man has completed the first successful, unsupported solo journey across Antarctica, making the \u2018impossible\u2019 930 mile trek across the icy continent entirely unaided. <\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Colin O\u2019Brady successfully finished the 54-day extreme hike on Wednesday, and documented his grueling journey on Instagram, where he shared a triumphant selfie at the wooden post marking the end of the Ross Ice Shelf, where the landmass ends.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs I pulled my sled over this invisible line, I accomplished my goal: to become the first person in history to traverse the continent of Antarctica coast to coast solo, unsupported and unaided.\u201d<\/em> O\u2019Brady wrote. <em>\u201cWhile the last 32 hours were some of the most challenging hours of my life, they have quite honestly been some of the best moments I have ever experienced.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The endurance athlete decided at the last minute to attempt to complete the last 80 miles in one final push over 32 hours, starting on Christmas Day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before now, the only people to cross Antarctica did so with assistance, such as using dogs or kites to propel them along, and receiving food drops along the way.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the challenge that saw him pass the South Pole, O\u2019Brady was competing with another walker, Louis Rudd, who was attempting the same trek in honor of Henry Worsley, an adventurer who died attempting the crossing in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brady\u2019s wife Jenna Besaw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/8a44f393f98a4b43bacf5034e398d796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> the AP he will wait for Rudd to complete the challenge so that they can celebrate their achievement together.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brady has completed a number of breathtaking endurance exercises, including breaking the record for the \u201cExplorers Grand Slam\u201d in 2016, which saw him ski to the South Pole before climbing the \u2018Seven Summits,\u2019 the tallest mountains on each of the seven continents.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"media__youtube-frame\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZyhyIMWr7JM\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Oregon man\u2019s thirst for extreme endurance challenges was sparked after he was badly burned in Thailand in 2008 and was told he may never walk properly again.
