{"id":39057,"date":"2013-06-04T20:06:13","date_gmt":"2013-06-04T19:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/fracknation-koch-industries-and-the-ties-that-bind\/39057\/"},"modified":"2013-06-04T20:06:13","modified_gmt":"2013-06-04T19:06:13","slug":"fracknation-koch-industries-and-the-ties-that-bind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/fracknation-koch-industries-and-the-ties-that-bind\/","title":{"rendered":"&quot;FrackNation&quot;: Koch Industries and the Ties That Bind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Part one of the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2013\/06\/03\/exposed-fracknation-deploys-tobacco-playbook-response-gasland-2\"><em>DeSmogBlog<\/em> investigation of &#8220;FrackNation&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; a film made in response to &#8220;Gasland 2&#8221; &#8211; honed in on the past track records and funding streams of co-directors Phelim McAller and Ann\u00a0McElhinney.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"image-right\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/sites\/commondreams.org\/files\/imagecache\/headline_image\/article_images\/kochtopus-3_0_1.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" class=\"imagecache imagecache-headline_image imagecache-default imagecache-headline_image_default\" width=\"200\" height=\"225\" \/><span class=\"caption\">  <\/span><\/span>We revealed that <em>Donors Trust<\/em>\/<em>Donors Capital<\/em> &#8211; the &#8220;dark money ATM of the right&#8221; &#8211; partially funded their first two films, &#8220;Mine Your Own Business&#8221; and &#8220;Not Evil, Just Wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We also revealed that\u00a0<span>&#8220;Not Evil,&#8221; a climate change denial documentary, was utilized by a partner of <\/span><em>Americans for Prosperity<\/em><span> (AFP) to push the\u00a0<\/span><span><em>Balanced Education for Everyone<\/em> (BEE) campaign. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That campaign calls\u00a0<\/span><span>for a &#8220;balanced&#8221; scientific teaching of the climate change &#8220;controversy&#8221; and parallels ones pushed for via an American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) model bill, by the Discovery Institute, and by the Heartland Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Yet, what about &#8220;FrackNation&#8221;? Who bankrolled it and are the screenings and is the tour really a grassroots endeavor?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It might seem that way based on its marketing, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brainyquote.com\/quotes\/keywords\/appearance.html\">but as Jean de La Fontaine once said<\/a>, &#8220;Beware, so long as you live, of judging men by their outward appearance.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Grassroots or Astroturf? Follow the Email List<\/h3>\n<p>Interested in where &#8220;FrackNation&#8221; and its film-making team are getting their funding from, I signed up for its email list. In so doing, I learned that\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/marketaces.com\/\"><em>Market Aces LLC\u00a0<\/em><\/a>runs it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/Screen%20shot%202013-05-27%20at%208.06.21%20PM.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;From the start, Market Aces had a vision to offer low-cost website development solutions to small businesses and a niche market within the political and non-profit sector \u2014 but only those who are dedicated to protecting the American Dream and freedom,&#8221;\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/marketaces.com\/about\/\">its website reads<\/a>.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Market Aces LLC\u00a0<\/em><span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/marketaces.com\/about\/\">shares an office<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<\/span><em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/leadership-institute\">The Leadership Institute<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(LI).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>According to LI&#8217;s website, it &#8220;<\/span><span>teaches conservative Americans how to influence policy through direct participation, activism, and leadership.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span>Its\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/leadershipinstitute.org\/AboutUS\/\">website also explains<\/a>\u00a0that &#8220;since 1979, [it] has trained more than 119,000 conservative activists, leaders, and students.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Playing by API&#8217;s Employee Advocacy Playbook?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Beyond getting email list building help from one of the\u00a0key &#8220;feeder&#8221; nodes in the right-wing network, it&#8217;s also questionable how many of the funders of &#8220;FrackNation&#8221; were of the grassroots variety. As the\u00a0<em>Pittsburgh Post-Gazette\u00a0<\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/stories\/business\/news\/industry-gets-cast-in-fracknation-the-latest-documentary-on-the-drilling-debate-220871\/#ixzz2UXz8XwXz\">explained<\/a>,\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>[T]he roster of &#8220;executive producers&#8221; who have donated at least $1 includes scores of energy industry associates. The filmmakers said Thursday they plan to return any donations given by &#8220;senior&#8221; workers in the industry, which they define as executives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Among those who donated money\u00a0to the\u00a0<em>KickStarter\u00a0<\/em>campaign:\u00a0&#8220;the director of an Ohio-based oil and gas outreach program and the head of external affairs at Cabot Oil and Gas, the company that&#8217;s fought accusations of water contamination in Dimock, Pa., for the past several years,&#8221;\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/stories\/business\/news\/industry-gets-cast-in-fracknation-the-latest-documentary-on-the-drilling-debate-220871\/#ixzz2U2RDJlk5\">according to the\u00a0<em>Post-Gazette<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Within four weeks of the\u00a0<em>Kickstarter<\/em>\u00a0fundraising campaign&#8217;s launch, &#8220;FrackNation&#8221; had already\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/stories\/business\/news\/industry-gets-cast-in-fracknation-the-latest-documentary-on-the-drilling-debate-220871\/#ixzz2U2RDJlk5\">raised over $150,000, raising over $22,000<\/a>\u00a0in the first two days of fundraising.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps &#8220;FrackNation&#8221; is playing by the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/643\">American Petroleum Institute<\/a>&#8216;s employee advocates&#8217; &#8220;corporate citizen&#8221; playbook.<\/p>\n<p>In a presentation given at an industry PR conference attended by\u00a0<em>DeSmogBlog\u00a0<\/em>in Houston, TX titled, &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/API%20on%20Empowering%20Employee%20Advocates.pdf\">Educating Employees On Key Issues To Encourage Brand Management Energy Nation: Empowering Employee Advocates<\/a>,&#8221; API&#8217;s Director of\u00a0External Mobilization\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/tara-smith-anderson\/4\/370\/904\">Tara Anderson<\/a>\u00a0explained how &#8211; in essence &#8211; to create an armada of fracking advocates from within the employee base of oil and gas corporations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Employees are the best brand ambassador you can come by&#8230;The most important principle to remember is to create a culture of advocacy,&#8221;\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/78-tara-anderson.mp3\">she said in Houston<\/a>. &#8220;This is really a community that regularly communicates and engages in the political process. It gives them all the necessary tools and empowers them to get involved and make a difference.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>This may explain why the film not only raised money with such rapidity, but also has full industry backing for its nationwide tour<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;FrackNation&#8221; Tour&#8217;s Americans for Prosperity Pitstops \u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>For an alleged grassroots-funded film, &#8220;FrackNation&#8221; has enjoyed robust support from Big Oil and other corporate interests in the first several months of its roadshow.\u00a0<span>Both\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.energyindepth.org\/two-thumbs-up-for-api-film-festival\/\"><em>Energy in Depth<\/em><\/a><span>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/6647\"><em>Marcellus Shale Coalition<\/em><\/a><span>\u00a0&#8211; for example &#8211; are also\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/stories\/business\/news\/industry-gets-cast-in-fracknation-the-latest-documentary-on-the-drilling-debate-220871\/#ixzz2U2QjtU00\">promoting the film<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The film is a case of the good guys hitting a home run that changes the entire game,&#8221;\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/eidmarcellus.org\/marcellus-shale\/fracknation-hits-a-home-run-for-the-good-guys\/16975\/\">exclaimed\u00a0<em>Energy in Depth<\/em>\u00a0in a Jan. 2013 review of the film<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php?title=Americans_for_Tax_Reform_and_Big_Tobacco\">Former Big Tobacco lackey Grover Norquist<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; now head of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php?title=Americans_for_Tax_Reform\"><em>Americans for Tax Reform<\/em>\u00a0(ATR)<\/a> &#8211; also wrote a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/grover-norquist\/review-of-frack-nation_b_2523185.html\">favorable review of the film<\/a>\u00a0to coincide with the film&#8217;s premiere on the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mark_Cuban\">Mark Cuban<\/a>-owned\u00a0<em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AXS_TV\">AXS TV<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>in Jan. 2013 and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.atr.org\/newsmaker-lunch-fracknation-a7414\">ATR&#8217;s hosting of the filmmaker&#8217;s for lunch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/cozy-ties-astroturf-ethical-oil-and-conservative-alliance-promote-tar-sands-expansion\">Ezra Lavant of &#8220;Ethical Oil&#8221; infamy<\/a>\u00a0has also aided in promoting the film. &#8220;FrackNation&#8221; co-director\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.freedomcruise.ca\/Speakers.aspx\">Magdalena Segieda will speak on Levant&#8217;s &#8220;Freedom Cruise&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0in August and he also\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ezralevant.com\/2012\/02\/what-the-frack.html\">had McElhinney and McAleer on his show in February<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Feb. 2013,\u00a0<em>Joint Landowner\u2019s Coalition of NY Inc.<\/em>\u00a0(JLCNY)\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/fracknation.com\/upcoming-screenings-in-new-york\/\">hosted two &#8220;FrackNation&#8221; screenings in upstate New York<\/a>, both of which McAleer attended. Just three months later in May,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.shaleshockmedia.org\/2013\/05\/17\/jlcny-from-grassroots-to-astrotruf\/jlcny-afp\/\">JLCNY announced its new partnership with AFP<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Later, in March,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/americansforprosperity.org\/michigan\/newsroom\/fracknation-review-fracking-for-the-truth\/\">AFP-Michigan played host to a &#8220;FrackNation&#8221; screening<\/a>, a fracking battleground state where the toxic process has yet to commence. In\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/fracknation.com\/three-screenings-in-illinois\/\">April<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/fracknation.com\/free-screenings-in-il\/\">May<\/a>,\u00a0AFP\u2014Illinois hosted a total of eight screenings of &#8220;FrackNation,&#8221; another state with an\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2013\/02\/28\/alec-fracking-chemical-disclosure-model-bill-illinois-regulation\">ongoing fracking battle<\/a>.\u00a0<span>AFP-MT and the Montana Petroleum Association &#8211; a state-level API &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/fracknation.com\/fracknation-tours-montana\/\">also screened the film<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most recently to coincide with the launch of the grassroots launch of &#8220;Gasland 2,&#8221; McAleer has taken &#8220;FrackNation&#8221; on-tour\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ruckus.org\/article.php?id=396\">to bird-dog it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On May 22,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/fracknationboulder.eventbrite.com\/\">AFP-Colorado hosted a &#8220;FrackNation&#8221; screening\u00a0<\/a>at the same time\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/145148605668736\/\">University of Colorado hosted a showing of &#8220;Gasland 2,&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0and the next &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=524083530989852&amp;set=a.292814347450106.72705.288353704562837&amp;type=1\">showdown of the century<\/a>&#8221; &#8211; as the &#8220;FrackNation&#8221; promoters put it &#8211; will take place on May 31 in Santa Barbara, CA.\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwingwatch.org\/content\/young-americas-foundation\"><em>Young America&#8217;s Foundation<\/em><\/a>\u00a0will\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yaf.org\/eventdetails.aspx?id=10376\">play host to the &#8220;FrackNation&#8221;\u00a0Santa Barbara screening<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/americansforprosperity.org\/maryland\/event\/fracknation-screening\/\">AFP-Maryland also hosted a screening<\/a>\u00a0of &#8220;FrackNation&#8221; on June 2. \u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;FrackNation&#8221; Screens at House Committee, Josh Fox Arrested in Hearing of Same Committee<\/h3>\n<p><span>&#8220;FrackNation&#8221; also\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/itsallpolitics\/2013\/03\/17\/174531815\/documentaries-help-amplify-conservative-voice\">screened at CPAC in March 2013<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2013\/02\/congress-gets-crack-at-fracknation-88076.html\">in front of the U.S. House\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/politics\/2013\/02\/phelim_mcaleer_s_fracknation_conservatives_now_have_their_own_movies_about.html\">Committee on Science, Space, and Technology<\/a>\u00a0in Feb. 2013. \u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important that politicians educate themselves about fracking. It\u2019s the future of American energy,\u201d McAleer\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2013\/02\/congress-gets-crack-at-fracknation-88076.html#ixzz2UYJyFvHi\">wrote in an email promoting the Capitol Hill screening<\/a>. \u201cWith all the lies and misinformation out there, we\u2019re excited to bring the truth about fracking to Capitol Hill.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/politics\/2013\/02\/phelim_mcaleer_s_fracknation_conservatives_now_have_their_own_movies_about.single.html\">Dave Weigel of\u00a0<em>Slate<\/em>\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0that &#8220;around 40 Republican staffers and members of Congress made time for a private movie screening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span>Among those in the room, according to Weigel, was\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/climate\/2012\/11\/28\/1248751\/rep-lamar-smith-who-criticized-the-idea-of-human-made-global-warming-set-to-be-chair-of-house-science-panel\/\">Committee Chair U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), a climate change denier<\/a>\u00a0who took\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/politicians\/contrib.php?cycle=2012&amp;cid=N00001811&amp;type=I\">$10,000 from Koch Industries<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/politicians\/industries.php?cycle=2012&amp;cid=N00001811&amp;type=I\">$83,750 from Big Oil<\/a><span>\u00a0for his 2012 electoral campaign<\/span><span>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHe was glad to have these points made in an easily digestible way, on screen,\u201d\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/politics\/2013\/02\/phelim_mcaleer_s_fracknation_conservatives_now_have_their_own_movies_about.single.html\">McAleer told Weigel of Smith&#8217;s reaction<\/a>\u00a0to seeing the film. \u201cPeople know there&#8217;s something smelly about Gasland, but people are suspicious about how it smells.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As a direct juxtaposition,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/2012\/2\/2\/gasland_director_josh_fox_arrested_at\">&#8220;Gasland 2&#8221; director Josh Fox was arrested at this same Committee&#8217;s hearing in Feb. 2012<\/a>\u00a0while filming for his then-upcoming film for &#8220;unlawful entry.&#8221; Though he had a pass to do the filming during the hearing, he was was slapped with this charge anyway.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a public hearing. I\u2019m within my First Amendment rights, and I\u2019m being taken out,&#8221; Fox calmly stated to those in the hearing room while being escorted out during his arrest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Independent Journalists? Oh, Really?<\/h3>\n<p><span>Then there&#8217;s the big question: how do two so-called independent journalists afford to pay for a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.californiamoves.com\/property\/details\/144342\/MLS-09-414355\/25-Spinnaker-St-Los-Angeles-Marina-Del-Rey-CA-90292.aspx\">$1 million condo off the Pacific Ocean in\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.californiamoves.com\/property\/details\/144342\/MLS-09-414355\/25-Spinnaker-St-Los-Angeles-Marina-Del-Rey-CA-90292.aspx\">Marina Del Rey, CA<\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/Screen%20shot%202013-05-27%20at%2011.47.43%20PM.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>This condo was purchased by them in May 2010, according to property records matching the listed address for\u00a0<em>Hard Boiled Films LLC<\/em>, the listed producer of &#8220;FrackNation.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/Hard%20Boiled%20Films%20LLC.jpg\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/Screen%20shot%202013-05-27%20at%2011.46.59%20PM.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>And though it&#8217;s obvious from the filmmaker&#8217;s track-records that they have ties to powerful right-wing upper-level circles, sources told\u00a0<i>DeSmogBlog<\/i>\u00a0that McAleer interviewed them under deceptive pretenses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>McAleer&#8217;s Interview Requests Under Misleading Pretenses<\/h3>\n<p>One of the featured interviewees in the film is Dimock, PA&#8217;s Craig Sautner alongside his wife, Julie. The Sautners were interviewed for the first &#8220;Gasland&#8221; and had their\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/shalegasoutrage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Craig-and-Julie-Sautners-story-in-press-packet.pdf\">water contaminated by Cabot Oil and Gas in 2008<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Trees were cleared and the ground leveled to make room for a four-acre drilling site less than 1,000 feet away from their land,&#8221;\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/business\/features\/2010\/06\/fracking-in-pennsylvania-201006\">an account in\u00a0<em>Vanity Fair<\/em>\u00a0explained<\/a>.\u00a0&#8220;The Sautners could feel the earth beneath their home shake whenever the well was fracked.\u00a0Within a month, their water had turned brown. It was so corrosive that it scarred dishes in their dishwasher and stained their laundry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with\u00a0<em>DeSmogBlog<\/em>, Sautner said McAleer approached him under misleading pretenses, claiming to be an anti-fracking filmmaker hoping to help out in\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2012\/12\/04\/fracking-making-its-way-toward-uk-recent-reports-reveal\">Ireland&#8217;s fracking fight<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was hesitant at first to do the interview, but he begged us and we said &#8216;okay.&#8217; Everything he ended up using in the video he took out of context.\u00a0<span>He had it all set up from the beggining of what he wanted to show and he wasn&#8217;t going to show the truth,&#8221; Sautner told\u00a0<em>DeSmogBlog<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Victoria Switzer, another Dimock victim of Cabot interviewed for &#8220;FrackNation&#8221; who spent four hours speaking with McAleer in her house\u00a0<\/span><span>(her interview did not appear in the film)<\/span><span>, also expressed similar sentiments to\u00a0<\/span><em>DeSmogBlog<\/em><span>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>He called he assured me he was doing an unbiased documentary both sides of the issues. I think it is significant because it goes to his lying, his manipulation of the truth, and misrepresentation of his agenda. I never would have let him in my home if I knew what his agenda was. Later when I saw some of his other work I was sickened that this man sat at the table my husband built in the home that is now threatened by the industry\u00a0<em>he serves<\/em>!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>McAleer mislead interviewees during the filming of &#8220;Mine Your Own Business,&#8221; too.\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.goldmanprize.org\/2005\/europe\">Stephanie Roth &#8211; a 2005<\/a><span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.goldmanprize.org\/2005\/europe\">\u00a0recipient of the prestigious\u00a0<em>Goldman Environmental Prize<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and a grassroots activist who has helped in the anti-mining fight in Romania &#8211; was also approached by McAleer for an interview for that film.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The catch: he did so &#8211; according to one account &#8211;\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.earthworksaction.org\/files\/publications\/Eugen_David.pdf\">under a psudonym and Roth refused to speak to him<\/a>\u00a0because McAleer was uninterested in interviewing any of the local grassroots activists she suggested should be interviewed besides her.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Big Tobacco Player, Climate Changer Deniers Makes Film Apperances<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;FrackNation&#8221; itself features numerous fossil fuel industry shills-for-hire, climate change deniers, as well as one former Big Tobacco apologist, all posing as &#8220;independent experts.&#8221; The roster of hired guns is robust:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Bruce Ames<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Ames sits on the Advisory Board of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/committee-constructive-tomorrow\"><em>Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow<\/em>\u00a0(CFACT)<\/a>, a climate change denial, fossil fuel industry-funded group on college campuses nationwide. He also\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/legacy.library.ucsf.edu\/tid\/rtl80c00\/pdf?search=%22bruce%20ames%20advancement%20of%20sound%20science%22\">formerly sat on the Advisory Board for\u00a0<em>The Advancement of Sound Science Coalition\u00a0<\/em>(TASSC)<\/a>, created by\u00a0<em>Philip Morris<\/em>, as explained in the book &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Trust-Us-Were-Experts-Manipulates\/dp\/1585421391\">Trust Us We&#8217;re Experts<\/a>&#8221; by Sheldon Rampton and John Stauber.<\/p>\n<p>In the film, Ames compares the chemical compounds found in fracking fluid to those found in cabbage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I gave you all of the long names of the chemicals in cabbage that give cancer to rats in high levels, you could get scared, but there&#8217;s really no danger in cabbage,&#8221;\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VLTgUQD3W7c\">he stated in the film<\/a>. &#8220;If people say fracking&#8217;s causing cancer, then they don&#8217;t know what they&#8217;re talking about.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/robert-bryce\"><strong>Robert Bryce<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Bryce&#8217;s analysis was also featured early-on in the film, though his fellowship at the\u00a0<em>Manhattan Institute<\/em><span>\u00a0<em>Center for Energy Policy and the Environment<\/em><\/span>\u00a0&#8211;<span>\u00a0heavily funded by the oil and gas industry &#8211; goes unmentioned<\/span><span>. Bryce was also interviewed extensively in the industry propaganda film, &#8220;<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alternet.org\/story\/152513\/exposed%3A_new_documentary_about_gas_drilling_hailed_as_indie_and_balanced,_but_here%27s_why_it%27s_neither\">Haynseville<\/a><span>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/james-delingpole\"><strong>James Delingpole<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Delingpole is an infamous climate change denier and columnist for the\u00a0<em>UK Telegraph<\/em>. In the film, Delingpole hints that the U.S. anti-fracking movement might be funded by Russia for geopolitical purposes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In fact, I would say Russia is screwed if it can&#8217;t export its gas,&#8221; Delingpole said in the film. &#8220;So, it really is very important for Russia that the shale gas revolution does not happen. It is also in Russia&#8217;s interest to fund those environmental groups which are committed to campaigning against fracking. That&#8217;s how it works.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Terry Engelder<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Engelder is viewed by many as a shale gas industry spokesman.\u00a0<span>He is the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/littlesis.org\/org\/99554\/Appalachian_Fracture_Systems\">co-founder of\u00a0<em>Appalachian Fracture Systems<\/em><\/a>, a natural gas consulting firm and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XM7Gvhk6VAY\">was interviewed in &#8220;Truthland,&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0a documentary\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.truthlandmovie.com\/\">made in response to &#8220;Gasland&#8221; by\u00a0<em>Energy In Depth<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8211;<\/span><strong>Jon Entine<\/strong><span>\u00a0&#8211; Entine is a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aei.org\/scholar\/jon-entine\/\">visiting fellow at the\u00a0<em>American Enterprise Institute<\/em><\/a>, which\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0revealed\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/environment\/2007\/feb\/02\/frontpagenews.climatechange\">takes millions to deny climate change from, among others, ExxonMobil<\/a>. He also has a fellowship at\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/business\/billionaires-role-in-hiring-decisions-at-florida-state-university-raises\/1168680\">George Mason University, heavily funded by the Koch Brothers<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><em>Mother Jones<\/em>\u00a0referred to Entine as an &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/tom-philpott\/2012\/02\/atrazine-syngengta-tyrone-hayes-jon-entine\">agribusiness apologist<\/a>&#8221; in a Feb. 2012 piece pointing to some his unsavory advocacy on behalf of multnational agribusiness corporation,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prwatch.org\/node\/11277\">Syngenta<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Bryan Shaw<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Shaw serves as head of the Texas Center for Environmental Quality (TCEQ). He&#8217;s also a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2011\/09\/rick-perry-bryan-shaw-climate-change-denier\">notorious climate changer denier<\/a>\u00a0whose fellow climate change denying boss &#8211; TX Republican Gov. Rick Perry &#8211;\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.followthemoney.org\/database\/StateGlance\/contributor_details.phtml?c=116443&amp;i=33\">took\u00a0$5,204,795 from Big Oil<\/a>\u00a0before his 2010 electoral victory. Perry\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.followthemoney.org\/database\/StateGlance\/contributor_details.phtml?c=134579&amp;i=33\">has already raised $671,069<\/a>\u00a0in advance of his forthcoming 2014 electoral efforts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;Merchants of Doubt&#8221; At It Again<\/h3>\n<p>McAleer can best be described as a favorite corporate\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php\/Third_party_technique\">third-party advocate<\/a>, a hired gun to sow seeds of doubt on the ecological impacts of fracking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Third party advocacy] offers camouflage, helping to hide the vested interest that lurks behind a message,&#8221; wrote Rampton and Stauber in &#8220;Trust Us We&#8217;re Experts.&#8221; &#8220;Putting the same message in someone else&#8217;s mouth gives it a credibility that it would not otherwise enjoy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Thus, while many critics write McAleer off as a convoluted goof ball, there&#8217;s more to the story than originally meets the eye: it&#8217;s the story of the Tobacco Playbook&#8217;s redux and the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/2013\/5\/13\/climate_tipping_point_concentration_of_carbon\">stakes of the climate crisis couldn&#8217;t be higher<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>In Dec. 1953, PR hegemon\u00a0<em>Hill and Knowlton<\/em>\u00a0formed the\u00a0<em>Tobacco Industry Committee for Public Information<\/em>, also forming the\u00a0<em>Tobacco Institute\u00a0<\/em>in 1963.
