Not only was her newborn welcomed in all her classes, she also was able to breastfeed her child without having to miss any lessons.<\/p>\n<p>Eight years ago, one of her professors, Melissa Cheyney, had created a <a href=\"https:\/\/studentlife.oregonstate.edu\/childcare\/family-friendly-syllabi-examples\">written policy<\/a> that permits student parents to bring their breastfeeding babies to class on an unlimited basis and their older children on those occasions when child care unexpectedly falls through. Cheyney\u2019s policy has been adopted by educators on her campus and across the country, as well as in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just a matter of letting me bring my child; my professors aren\u2019t just dealing with it,\u201d Barnes says. \u201cThey are encouraging it. They recognize it\u2019s important for me to follow through with my passion, outside of being a mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/iwpr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/wpallimport\/files\/iwpr-export\/publications\/C378.pdf\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\">Student parents represent about one-quarter<\/a> of all U.S. undergraduates\u2014about half of them single parents, according to the Institute for Women\u2019s Policy Research.<\/p>\n<p>And while their ranks<span> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iwpr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/wpallimport\/files\/iwpr-export\/publications\/C445.pdf\">have been growing<\/a>, the number of two- and four-year colleges with<span> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationdepartment.org\/daycare.php?page=1\">on-campus child care<span> <\/span><\/a>declined more than 5 percent between 2005 and 2015, according to the research institute.
