Just 14% say their countries should allow more immigrants. (Those who said no immigrants should be allowed volunteered this response.)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.informationliberation.com\/files\/FT_18.12.07_GlobalViewsMigration_around-world-few-immigration3.png\" width=\"640\" title=\"\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In Europe, majorities in Greece (82%), Hungary (72%), Italy (71%) and Germany (58%) say fewer immigrants or no immigrants at all should be allowed to move to their countries. Each of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2016\/11\/02\/italy-on-track-to-surpass-greece-in-refugee-arrivals-for-2016\/\">these countries<\/a> served as some of the most popular transit or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewglobal.org\/2016\/08\/02\/2-asylum-seeker-destinations-germany-again-europes-leading-destination\/\">destination countries<\/a> during Europe\u2019s recent surge in asylum seekers. (In several countries, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2018\/09\/19\/a-majority-of-europeans-favor-taking-in-refugees-but-most-disapprove-of-eus-handling-of-the-issue\/\">most disapprove<\/a> of how the European Union has handled the refugee issue.)<\/p>\n<p>People in other countries around the world hold views similar to those in Europe. Large majorities in Israel (73%), Russia (67%), South Africa (65%) and Argentina (61%) say their countries should let in fewer immigrants. In every country surveyed, less than a third say their nation should allow more immigrants to enter.<\/p>\n<p>Worldwide, a record <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/development\/desa\/population\/migration\/data\/estimates2\/estimates17.shtml\">258 million people<\/a> lived outside their country of birth in 2017, up from 153 million in 1990.
