{"id":385875,"date":"2018-11-20T22:55:56","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T21:55:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/killing-plants-is-the-fastest-way-to-end-the-world\/"},"modified":"2018-11-20T22:55:56","modified_gmt":"2018-11-20T21:55:56","slug":"killing-plants-is-the-fastest-way-to-end-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/killing-plants-is-the-fastest-way-to-end-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Killing Plants Is the Fastest Way to End the World"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<aside class=\"series-card row\">\n<div class=\"series-image small-4 columns\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/series\/planet-or-profit\/\"><br \/>\n<img width=\"200\" height=\"113\" class=\"attachment-hd_thumbnail size-hd_thumbnail to4-lazy-load\" alt=\"Planet or Profit?\" srcset=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/2018_0129n-porp-200x113.jpg 200w, https:\/\/truthout.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/2018_0129n-porp-400x225.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" data-src=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/2018_0129n-porp-200x113.jpg\"\/><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-018-35068-1\">recently published study<\/a> has found that \u201c[c]limate change and human activity are dooming species at an unprecedented rate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-018-35068-1\">Co-extinctions annihilate planetary life during extreme environmental change<\/a>,\u201d published in the journal Scientific Reports, was a joint effort by Australian and Italian researchers from Flinders University in Adelaide and the European Commission\u2019s Joint Research Centre, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>To conduct the study, the researchers created 2,000 \u201cvirtual Earths.\u201d They then added in different stressors such as abrupt climate change replicating that which we are now experiencing, a nuclear winter following the detonation of multiple nuclear weapons, and a massive impact from an asteroid.<\/p>\n<p>Each scenario resulted in showing that plant and animal species that are wiped out by any of these extreme environmental changes dramatically increases the risk of a domino effect that could annihilate all life on Earth.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Co-Extinction<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The researchers found that these worst-case scenarios led to what they called \u201cco-extinctions,\u201d wherein an organism dies out because it is dependent upon another doomed species.<\/p>\n<p>The team developed models to predict ecosystem function and resilience, including past, present and predicted future ability to change and adapt.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that the fastest way to doom all life on Earth was to remove the most ecologically important species \u2014 the species with the most connections in their ecological network \u2014 first.
