Russia is flexing its muscle\u00a0or is at least engaged in some serious trolling\u00a0just as\u00a0Trident Juncture 18 is underway in Norway\u00a0\u2014<\/em>\u00a0NATO\u2019s largest drills in decades with some 50,000 troops, 10,000 combat vehicles, 65 ships, and 250 aircraft.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Friday a\u00a0Russian\u00a0Tupolev\u00a0Tu-142 bomber unexpectedly flew close to the USS Mount Whitney\u00a0at the very moment Marines on board were gathered for a group photo during the NATO military games<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Russian media confirmed the incident, describing the U.S. Sixth fleet\u2019s flagship (the command and control ship for the fleet)\u00a0as being \u201cblindsided\u201d<\/a> while the military and aircraft\u00a0analysis site\u00a0The Aviationist <\/em>described the provocative flyover as \u201cmore or less overhead\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sailors aboard the Blue Ridge-class command ship of the U.S. Navy USS Mount Whitney had gathered for a group photo on deck, when a Tupolev TU-142, RF-34063 \/ 56 RED based on AFP photographs, flying in international airspace, soared more or less overhead, on Nov. 2, 2018.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The large long-range bomber appeared during the moments a formal group picture was being staged aboard the USS Whitney, Military.com confirmed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The stunt comes after in previous weeks Moscow made clear\u00a0its displeasure over what are by far NATO\u2019s largest military exercises since the end of the Cold War<\/strong>, saying that the two-week long games would not go unanswered.<\/p>\n

According to Military.com the Russians were\u00a0sending a clear message<\/a>:<\/p>\n

The Tupolev\u2019s passage appeared to be part of Russia\u2019s response. But Colonel Garth Manger, a British Royal Marine in charge of operational duties on board the U.S.\u00a0Navy<\/a>\u00a0warship, took it in his stride. \u201cThey\u2019re watching us and we\u2019re watching them.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
