Beijing may be bracing for a worst-case scenario with the US.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Xi made the blunt remarks last week as he was meeting the Southern Theatre Command, the military officials responsible for one of China\u2019s five strategic war zones. The calls were made on Thursday as part of his four-day visit to Guangdong province, but the Chinese state media <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/military\/article\/2170452\/prepare-war-xi-jinping-tells-military-region-monitors-south\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> them only on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s necessary to strengthen the mission\u2026 and concentrate preparations for fighting a war,\u201d<\/em> President Xi said. <em>\u201cWe need to take all complex situations into consideration and make emergency plans accordingly.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>We have to step up combat readiness exercises, joint exercises and confrontational exercises to enhance servicemen\u2019s capabilities and preparation for war.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"media__youtube-frame\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2fweSjAvGrw\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One of the key responsibilities of the Southern Theater Command is protecting China\u2019s interests in the South China Sea, where Beijing claims sovereignty over a number of islands. The sea is of strategic importance to Chinese trade.
