Istanbul and Ankara are seeing a second day of violent protests, with tear gas and water cannons being deployed.<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/news\/istanbul-park-protests-police-095\/\">Follow RT\u2019s live updates on Taksim Square<br \/>\n  protest<\/a><br \/>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n  Minor scuffles broke out after protesters lobbed fireworks at<br \/>\n  officers as they were drawing back, the state-run Anadolu Agency<br \/>\n  reports. Police removed barricades around the square, located in<br \/>\n  the heart of the city, which had previously been erected to<br \/>\n  prevent the anti-government protests, Private Dogan news agency<br \/>\n  said.<br \/>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n  Despite the authorities decision to allow tens of thousands to<br \/>\n  flood onto the square, the main subway gateway to Taksim, the<br \/>\n  central station in the city&#8217;s metro network, has reportedly been<br \/>\n  shut down in an effort to keep more people from reaching the<br \/>\n  ongoing protests.<br \/>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n  In the capital, Ankara, security forces battled with<br \/>\n  demonstrators who had amassed at a park near Prime Minister Recep<br \/>\n  Tayyip Erdogan&#8217;s office. Rallies have also been staged in the<br \/>\n  cities of Bodrum, Konya and Izmir.<br \/>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n  Confronted with the growing street opposition, Erdogan remained<br \/>\n  defiant, demanding that protesters <i>\u201cstop their demonstrations<br \/>\n  immediately.&#8221;<\/i> <i><br \/><\/i>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <i>&#8220;Police were there yesterday, they&#8217;ll be on duty today and<br \/>\n  also tomorrow because Taksim Square cannot be an area where<br \/>\n  extremists are running wild,&#8221;<\/i> the PM warned.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Screenshot from AP video\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/files\/news\/1f\/47\/20\/00\/43.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\n  On Monday, several dozen activists tried to stage a sit-in in<br \/>\n  Gezi Park, the last area of green space left on Taksim Square,<br \/>\n  after several trees were torn up to make way for a commercial<br \/>\n  redevelopment.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Erdogan dismissed the small protest on Wednesday, saying<br \/>\n  authorities would go ahead with the plan, which entails the<br \/>\n  construction of a replica Ottoman-era barracks that could house a<br \/>\n  shopping mall or apartments. \u00a0\n  <\/p>\n<p>Following three days of police pressure, which saw officers douse<br \/>\n  peaceful protesters with pepper spray and tear gas, the sit-in<br \/>\n  attracted support from broad sections of Turkish society.<br \/>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Screenshot from AP video\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/files\/news\/1f\/47\/20\/00\/44.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\n  On Friday morning, riot police stormed the camp, deploying water<br \/>\n  cannons and tear gas, sparking the ongoing unrest.
